Clear, dark red beer with a thin bubbly head. The predominant aspect of the aroma is fruit. Flavour is an initial fruity hit with the malt and hops following up after. They’re balanced very well and all three remain in the mouth after the initial swallow as well. A nice, fruity ale with plenty of body and an almost wine-esque finish.

Ruby deep hue and a small head. Sweet ruby notes and light cassis on the mouth. Nice and soft bubbles.

Jolie couleur brun-rouge; arômes fruités; goût malté avec des notes de chocolat; un petit peu d’amertume à la fin; une bière intéressante

Bottle from Morrisons, watching Belgium beat Korea. A bit lighter copper than I had expected, white bubbles. Sweet and malty, alcohol present but quaffable nevertheless. Modest spicy hop, but this is really about slightly fruity cake-like malts. A pleasant strong ale.

Cor vermelho queimado, espuma em tons marrons. Bem equilibrada entre malte e lupulo.mais para o doce. Lembrou frutas passas. Ideal para uma noite mais fresca.

Bottle, 500 ml; this one’s an old favourite from my early drinking years. Pours clear, deep, reddish amber with a tiny amount of off-white head. Fair bit of lacing present. Aroma of caramel and wholemeal bread malts, fruitcake, spices and a small floral hop note. As it warms, a fair bit of of a smokey note is detectable. Taste is rather sweet, with caramel coming right to the forefront and pushing the bread back, as do the dark fruity notes which are now joined by some orange, cirtus and perhaps even blackcurrent. No hops detected though bitterness is present thanks to the rather well-done malts, though the balance is certainly in favour of the sweet notes. Medium bodied with moderate to low carbonation, there’s no alcohol detectable save for the nice level of warmth as it sinks in. Not quite the the incredible brew I believed it to be back in the day, but I’d definitely still drink it when available. Quite a fair bit better than the frankly overrated Hobgoblin, that’s for sure!

500ml bottle from supermarket. Colour is deep brown. Aroma is toast, floral, fruit and sweet caramel taste is the same. Reminds me of a Belgium beer.

500ml bottle, many thanks to Finn for sharing. Huge, mostly diminishing, beige head to a clear amber coloured body. Nice malt-fruity aromas. Caramel malty flavours with leafy hops towards the ending. Fine bodied. Clean in the mouth. Pleasing without greater excitements (at Finns, Tromsø 27.05.2014).

Bottle. Aroma malty, caramel, lightly fruity, plums, grapes. Clear amber to brown colour. Taste is quite balanced, blunt English hops, caramel and light roasted malt. Light fruity. Quite good ESB.
