’Butty Bach’ is Welsh for ’little friend’. This full-bodied, smooth and satisfying premium ale is burnished gold in colour, and certainly has made a few friends in its time.
We brew it using Maris Otter and Crystal malts, flaked barley, malted wheat, and locally grown Fuggles, Goldings and Bramling Cross hops. With such fine ingredients, no wonder it remains a firm favourite among our followers.

500ml bottle. Light amber with a thin white head. Soft fruit aroma, taste is fruity too with a bitter finish and a buttery mouthfeel.

Bottle from the Co-op, says it’s bottle conditioned but I couldn’t see any true in there. Pours a bright golden-amber with a thin white foam, a little caramel and sweetcorn on the nose. Malty sweet at first, then with a dry, faintly dusty edge. Light bitterness and a hint of toasted caramel in the dry malty finish. A pleasant quaffing bitter, that probably would have been a golden mild back in the day!

Bottle at Sternbräu, Rankweil. Aroma is malt, hint of caramel, soft fruity notes. Flavour is light bitter. Body is light, bit watery. Weak but refreshing.

Sickly yeasty aroma (on cask). In the bottle, was nice and malty, not too hoppy aroma. Generally sweet and a bit nutty. Lingering herbal hop aftertaste. Good.

Average beer that fills a gap when not much about like a an old chip butty but with a soggy bread

Cask at The Post Office Vaults, Burslem. A clear deep golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of caramel, butter, some bread, slight lemon and subtle floral hops. Taste of caramel, butter, some lemon, maybe orange and subtle floral hops. Light bodied and soft carbonation. A buttery, floral hop bitterness in the finish. An OK session ale but I can’t get past the butteriness of it.

Sampled from a 50cl bottle from the brewery. Copper/Orange colour with light carbonation. Bread-like aroma and a taste dominated by caramel with notes of red fruits. Not much hop bitterness. Quite a delicate, sweet taste, but a little bland and watery.

500ml bottle. Clear orangey, pale golden colour with average, thick, creamy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Strawy, minimally grainy aroma, hoppy overtones with a touch of gooseberry. Taste is minimally sweet, pale malty, hoppy overtones with hints of gooseberry. Unspectacular.

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. Locals seem obsessed with this desperately average ale. When working in a pub local to the Wye Valley, complaints went up if this was not available on tap, It’s actually funny! Pours light brown golden with slight fizz, overpowering caramel flavours with off-bread notes. Light body with oily texture and a soft carbonation. Overall "little friend" (in English) is anything but, and Wye Valley offer so many better ales in my opinion.

Just spent several days in Ross on Wye and this was available from hand pump in the nearest pub. Really enjoyed it and can’t see why it has so many negative reviews.
