3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is opaque black (flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain/coffee, dark chocolate/fudge, scorched sugar), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of ink, shoe polish, blackberry, vanilla, alcohol, light note of smoke.
Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, creamy/oily texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Well Iíll be...this is actually good, despite the dumb gimmick. Wynkoop made this?! Bizarre. Quite complex and enticing in the nose...roasty, chocolaty, smoky, fruity...itís got more depth than most stouts (the ink and shoe polish effects are positives for me...phenolic but not in an unpleasant way). Itís quite sweet but not syrupy/cloying...it could definitely use more bitterness to help balance it, though. Totally opaque, too, a pretty rare thing. I donít have a lot of confidence that Wynkoop is finally honing their skills across the board, but this is a surprisingly cool beer that I would probably buy again.
