2013 Beerdrinker of the Year beer. Itís an English-style olde ale created by 2012 Beerdrinker winner J. Wilson and our head brewer Andy Brown.
The beer was brewed with some unique measures. 75% of the beer was fermented with British ale yeast in a standard steel fermenter. For vintage authenticity, the rest of the beer was fermented with brettanomyces yeast in an oak barrel. This clever step gives the beer a rustic, fruity profile similar to beers of the past.
Itís a dark brown, malty beer with notes of chocolate, fruit, gentle hops and 8% ABV.
The beerís recipe includes British base malts and a list of specialty malts that includes Special B, Golden Naked Oats, crystal and chocolate malts.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
On tap at the brewery. Perhaps I was disappointed that Oyster Stout had run out and I was geared for that, but I found this beer lacking. Poured a clear brown with almost no head - which is ok for style. Aroma of cherry, chocolate, and syrup. The flavor was mostly a sweet and sticky syrup. Very viscous. Syrup overwhelms the palate so that other sensations cannot come out.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
On tap at brewery. Poures black with brown head and lace.
Sour funky barrel aroma and flavors. A crazy mix of flavors with minimal carbonation and a moderate mouthfeel. Over big, bold, but wild with sourness and flavors that make it challenging to drink more than half a pint.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Heavy dark dark brown with a very thin tan head. Nose was syrupy and dark with some dark fruity malt juice, dates, dark maple, and some brown sugar. Flavor is much the same with roasty dark malt syrup, dark fruitiness like dates/figs, a touch of molasses, and a subtle dry metallic tone on the back. Lingering syrupy finish.
