COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
NOTE! In the US this beer is marketed as Xbeeriment #44. The reason for this is that any references to President Obama would only be permitted by US authorities if we had a written permission from the White House. So the dressing’s changed, but the beer stays the same!

Also please NOTE that the first US edition of "Xbeeriment #44" is erroneously labelled 10.4% ABV.

English: Brewed to celebrate Barack Obama’s inaugural as the 44th President of the United States, and the first black person to hold the office. A potent stout with a fair amount of peated malt in the grain bill. This adds a smoky character to the beer which obviously also has roasted aromas from the dark malts and roasted barley as well as loads of citrusy hop notes from the US hop varieties. NOTE: From 2009 - 2012 this beer was brewed at Amager Bryghus. From the summer of 2012 it will be brewed at Herslev Bryghus.

Pours dark brown, black in glass, 1 cm tanned head. Smells of yeast, roasted malts, peat and hints of diacetyl. Taste is massive roasty malts, medium sweet. Then a wall of tar and smoke takes over. Wow. The taste is better than the aroma promise for sure. Also some liquorice in the back. Nice aggressive finish, quite bitter, medium. Full body, average carbonation, oily texture. Totally this is a bit hit and miss for me. The taste is awsome but the smell is not so good. Some more balance here and the beer will rise

Opaque black beer. Dry dry palate!! Rich malt, quite well toasted. Some bitter hops then comes through. Some creamy malt and a trace of dark fruits in the finish. The combination of over dryness, hard roasted malt and hops that impart nothing but bitterness are about as welcome as a kick in the goolies! 2.3.

CBC. Opaque black - brown beer. good tan head. Palate is soft and airy. Minerals. Creamy dark malt, a little roast. Light coffee. Light touch of smoke. Unsweet dark chocolate. Finishes with a little roast bitterness. Well joined up!

50 cl bottle. BBE 01.09.2012.
Pours deep dark red, almost black color with large beige head. Aroma of ash, wood, cocoa, dark chocolate, mild vanilla and bourbon notes and dark berries. Flavor of chocolate, dark berries, cocoa, mild wooden notes and some hints of dark fruits. Slight alcohol burn comes through, very faint off-flavors, could be quite nice without them. Also, the berries start to dominate as the beer warms up.

Flavour has coffee, ash, some vanilla and cocoa. Also some milk and vegetable‐like aroma. Flavour is somewhat sour with berries, especially bilberries. Also some vegetables, vanilla, ash and coffee. The vegetable aromas grow stronger towarss the end of the glass. Not bad, but this might have been better as fresh.

[5/11/12] Draught sample at Copenhagen Beer Celebration. Black with a light brown head. Roasted grains aroma, slightly acidic. Sweet-acidic roasty flavor with a dry finish. Medium-bodied. Nice to have a beer with the same name as me, glad it’s pretty good.

500 ml bottle purchased fifteen months ago at Holiday Wine Cellar ($10.89). This must be the first edition as it is labeled at 10.4%. Pours a true pitch black with a full three fingers of fluffy tan-grey head that has good retention. Aroma of stale, peaty, and somewhat burnt malts along with notes of roasted nuts, smoked meat, and some chocolate. Flavor has lots of astringent burnt malts, charred wood, liquid smoke, ashtray, dark dark chocolate (more like straight bitter cacao bean), and burnt black coffee. Finishes with more bitter-burnt-astringent flavors on the tongue. The burnt flavors become too much (even at this sub-imperial level of stout), and this could actually use some more sweetness. I suppose the "citrusy hop notes" mellowed out because of my aging this bottle. (188, 695)

Something’s a little weird about this one, kinda cigarette ashy and not nearly as "smoked malt" as I’d like. Also, not very much of a stout, kinda sour and not rich or remotely sweet.

500 ml bottle @ 3 Små Rum. Pours oily black with a very small dark brown head that quickly dissipates without leaving any trace on the glass. Smell is sweet with vanilla, chocolate, prunes, wood, glue, toasted malts, lemon zest and overripe grapes. Taste is sweet with roasted malts, coffee, overripe tropical fruits, milk chocolate, solvents and hints of smoke. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, tiny sour and medium bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, slightly sour and bitter with roasted malts, coffee and cocoa. Weird glue- and solvent-like smell and taste sadly ruins the beer.

Solid black with a decent beige head that leaves behind some good lacing. Aroma is olives, spice, smoke. Taste is olives, vinegar. Slightly sour on the palate. Not great.
