out of the bottle. pours a deep off-black hue with a medium-sized tan head. smells of roasted malts and is overall sweet. tastes of coffee, roasted malts, and fruits, esp. cherries and blackberries. full mouth-feel. finishes slightly bitter. not bad. not a winner.

Pours a nice dark brown (almost black) with a small tan head. Aromas of sweet roast malts, chocolate, and hints of fruit (cherries?). Flavor is almost to sweet, I can detect little trace amounts of licorice. Felt a little watery to me on the finish.

Deep garnet pour with a short toffee head. Some lacing noted as it went down. Dark fruits, lighter coffee, and a hint of toffee in the aroma... albeit rather weak. Flavor carred the aroma through while adding some caramel, spiciness, and floral hops. Quite smooth on the palate with a light-med malty base. There wasn’t a great deal of complexity or anything groundbreaking, but this was very smooth and enjoyable.

Looks black, but a deep ruby when held to the light. LIght brown head with pretty good retention, and some nice lacing. No strong aromas, but a pleasant, light, caramel and licorice scent. Somehwat lighter body than I expected, and some sharp fizziness. Sweet malty character with notes of caramel and molasses. Quickly fading, mildly sweet finish. Nice session beer for folks who enjoy a milder, smooth, and non-bitter character.

Nice looking beer. Medium bodied and easy on the palate. Very creamy and richly flavored. Decent amount of roasted malts. Finishes with an anise/licorice flavor. Noticable chocolate and molasses flavors in the middle. This is a good beer as is, and I disagree with the others that it needs more flavor. It comes across in an original way and is okay as is.

One of the first non-BMC beers I ever had, roughly 18 years ago, at the sunset grill and tap, before it had *any* taps - old timers will remember, the younger crowd may not believe it. I finally tried it again the other night. A beer that helped lead me down the path of beer-hunting still proved interesting. Originally blowing me away with malt intensity now comes across my palate as well, balanced but still malt-forward, very creamy, with that mile anise bite. Very mellow.

An unoffensive beer. It tastes like the typical German Schwarzbier after which it is styled. Modest head, nice dark color. Clean tasting, the finish is omewhat lacking, flavors of chocolate and a little hint of maltiness.

A very dark beer with a light tan head which lasted the whole beer. A faint spice aroma. Flavor is well balanced. Just the right amount of roasted malt flavor with a slight sweet finish. This is one smooth beer. I like it.

Creamy, mild, and very good. Very dark brown color, almost black. Head was tiny, dissipated quickly, and it’s flat.

Bottle. Poured a very dark brown. Very small, tan head, but good retention. Aroma of malts and coffee. Low carbonation. Flavor was a little underwhelming (much less than I expect from a black beer), but pleasant. Coffee and malt flavors with a nice finish. Good, but not great.
