UPDATED: JUN 15, 2010 Had from 12 oz. bottle from Hi Time Wine on June 15, 2010. Pours a dark brown/black with slight tan head. Aroma of toffee and malts. Taste is very watered-down and weak. A sweet flavor with nice malt flavors and seemingly no hops. Creamy, slight carbonation. Used to be one of my favorite black beers back in the day. These days, I know that there are much more flavorful black beers out there and this lager just doesn’t cut the mustard any more.

Had from bottle at Stuffed Sandwich on July 25th, 2003 - Day 25 of Blake’s Beer Month™
Only my second Scharzbier, I wasn’t really sure what to expect, the first one I had was a bit thin with no real substance - the Xingu raised my appreciation for this beer type. The aroma is faint, but more noticeable than the Kostriker with a slight waft of sweetness coming off the beer. It pours with a dark black appearance and a good sized brown head. The flavor of this Schwarzbier was much "fuller" than the Kostriker - a bit more carbonation than I expected, it could lose a bit here and be a bit better. This beer dances on the palate with carbonation and a smooth, easy drinkability. An interesting beer, and one I’d drink again - a nice change of pace in the beer-drinking world. Now - I just need to find some of the higher rated Schwarzbiers.

Dark appearance with a tan head. Fairly light bodied but flavorful nonetheless. Taste is sweet with chocolate and some sour fruit showing through as the beer warmed. Palate is a little thin. Overall a pretty good beer and just light enough to be refreshing on a hot day.

Nice and black with small tan head. Malt aroma. Very smooth, if (as noted) a bit thin. Slightly sweet roast malt flavors with a hint of molasses. I got it as a novelty, but it was much better than I expected.

Smooth, thin, dark head that's almost nonexistant. Sweet but not syrupy.

Nose that reminds me of root beer, dark black with no head, very cool complex flavor. I don't know why but it kind of reminds me of sea-wead with some salt to it. but in a good way. The palate was smooth and flowy, not chunky or thick. I typically am not a fan of this style but this is one that I might have again.

A black beer that has a pleasing smell and taste. One of the best black beers that I have ever had.

Brown. Just brown. The aroma is malty and has some alcohol in the aroma (smells like a brown ale). The flavor is dark, roasty, and caramely. It has a sweet finish with some bitterness in the background (not hop bitterness, more of a grain bitterness). Satisfying. It has some sediment at the bottom, as well.

Dark brownish almost black in color, nice wispy brown head that leaves a good lacing, faint roasted coffee malt aroma, thin and watery mouthfeel, decent roasted malty flavors, light bodied a little too light, this does have a good bitter finish, not all that bad even though my bottle might be a little old.

a dark fruity taste that isn't too sweet. still tastes like a not so special lager though

Deep dark color with an amber head that lingers. Aroma & taste of coffee, raisins, and light chocolate. Interesting, different, and worth a try. Definitely not your typical schwarzbier.
