Looks like coca cola. Palate okay, not special. No taste, litterally, doesn’t taste anything. Weird.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Near black red-brown beer under a pale greige head, leaving lace. Thick, pure malty aroma, both sweet and roasted/burnt malts, raisins. Less sweet than the nose suggests, sweetish bread, Pumpernickel German black bread. Probably not very high final gravity, but it hands a really heavy impression out; slick to viscous. Definitely not bad, it is indeed true to the German Schwarz character. Proved better than expected, if nowhere the icon MJ used to make it.

Nearly black pour. Thinner than expected; almost watery. Malty and well balanced. Fine but unremarkable.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Dark cola-colored beer with a medium foamy beige head that lasts a while. Musky, although rather faint nose of molasses, brown sugar, and cardboard. Flavor is a bit sweet with burnt sugar, caramel, and candied nuts followed by a mild bitterness. It finishes surprisingly dry which makes it less cloying than it could be given the initial flavors. Pretty good beer.

12oz bottles at mercadito in River North in Chicago (great contemporary Mexican). Nothing tremendously special. Dark roasts notes with some earthy/piney hops. Really thin body. Interesting but once was enough.

Draft. From afar, Xingu Black Beer looks, well, black. But get closer and you’ll notice the beer’s thinner and less imposing than all that. A hold to the light will even reveal some clearer ruby hues at the edges. Atop the brew, a head the color and consistency of latte foam gives off the faint fragrance of anise, treacle and prunes. In 1999, Chicago’s Beverage Tasting Institute awarded Xingu a gold medal and a 91-point rating, calling the brew "black silk." This description is apt -- the body is delicate and satin-smooth. While the front of the flavor is surprisingly fruity, as if it were stuffed with figs and topped with reduced wine, prickly carbonation awakens the tongue to deeper notes of earthy hops, cocoa powder and toasted wheat bread. A well-balanced finish deposits just a touch of brown sugar sweetness and raisiny tang.

Bottle: Black with a tan head that dissipated quickly. The roasted malt flavor is well balanced with a slight taste of caramel.
