Hmmmm... What is a black beer supposed to taste like? I was expecting something similar to a doppelbock, but this isn't. It looks like a stout, feels like porter. Malty sweet, with little hoppiness or roastiness. Interesting.

Very dark with small bubbly head. Smells and tastes very sweet. Takes a while to taste any bitterness in the finish but it is there. Pleasant enough but not exceptional.

Medium tan head, and poured a deep ebony. Fruity aroma. Sweet and malty on the front end of the taste, and finished with a light bitterness.

On tap at Bier Markt (Ottawa, ON). Pours a black body with a thin beige creamy head. Decent malty/hoppy aroma with some light roasty hints. Its well balanced taste carries chocolate and roasted cereals notes. Ends with a good bitter/roasty finish. Very decent Schwarzbier.

Head: light brown, stays on Aroma: not very strong at all, usual metallic lager aroma, but nothing much else besides a sweetish note of malt. Color: dark auburn against light (clear), black otherwise Taste: sweet malt and caramel up front, some roastiness in the middle, a bit of hops in the finish Palate: quite light body, moderately high carbonation (which dies down a bit when sitting in glass), slightly burnt caramel in aftertaste.

Bottle into a glass. Pours a dark, almost black, brown with a tan head. Not a bad schwartzbier, but not great either. Worth a try.

I wasn’t expecting much from it but I was pleasantly surprised. Very smooth and less bitter than the strong color suggests. Some have mentioned an aftertaste of medicine, though I didn’t notice it. All in all, a good dark beer. black, clear, brown foam, medium sweetness, lightly bitter, full body, thin feel, soft carbonation,

DATE TASTED: October 26, 2014... GLASSWARE: Sam Adams lager glass... OCCASION: ending a weekend with something dark... APPEARANCE: mountainous brown foam-like head; as expected, dark black body; reasonable lacing... AROMA: roasted toffee front and center; chocolate and cocoa also show up--still inviting... PALATE: flat cola that smooths the tongue; surprisingly light-bodied for a "dark" beer....TASTE: toffee and candied sugars make this a mellow, easy-drinking lager with little fanfare or suggestion of its darkness; though sweet, not much of an impression... OVERALL: no real arguments with the style or its interpretation, but the price and "imported" label promise more than is delivered...

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy very dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, plum, fig, light char, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, plum, fig, light char, and yeast/roasted earthiness. Minimal roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, dark bread, molasses, raisin, plum, fig light char, and roast/yeast earthiness. Nice complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit notes; with no cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and moderately creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is a nice Schwarzbier style. All around good complexity and robustness of dark/roasted malt and light-moderate dark fruit flavors; and very smooth to drink. A fair bit fruity in the nose and taste, but not by an overwhelming amount. A nicely enjoyable offering.
