1.1 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 5/20 salvinian (8) - Des Moines, Iowa, USA - APR 23, 2010After much effort, I find that there is little to say about the aroma, because the aroma is found wanting. If anything, I smell the slightest breath of rust. This probably has a lot to do with its heavy concentration of head. It is a dark-colored, and quite opaque beer. Even when illuminated with my high powered Stinger LED flashlight, very little light makes it through. Both sweet and bitter, with a little sourness, it’s hard to describe--but not entirely pleasant. The carbonation seems artificial, and leaves no finish. I don’t know what I paid for this one, but the money can definitely be better spent on other beers of its type.
OK, an hour later and I’m still trying to put this one down. I almost want to dump it down the drain for a new brew. I’m left with the astringent flavor of witch hazel. I am downgrading this beer.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 pintbypint (1975) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 12, 2013
12 oz brown bottle. Deep brown pour, tan coloured head fades into a film on the surface with some ok lacing. Nose has some sweet dark malts, light roast. Taste is of bitter chocolate, mild raisin fruits, with dryish roasty elements, and an edge of metallic tanginess. Light and mild in the mouth. An ok schwarzbier, used to drink this a lot in my early beer drinking days.

355ml bottle pours black in color with a finger of light beige head that lingers for a bit and settles to leaves some spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma is light roasted grains and dark fruits. Taste is malty and fruity sweetness with a light roasted grain and hop bitterness. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. A decent black lager that is worthy of sampling.
