A bit of a curate’s egg this one. Has a nice citrus aroma and attractive amber tone. Initial flavour is nicely ’malty sweet’ but then it all goes wrong. Finish is just soooo bitter with that curiously sour taste you get when eating grapefruit, but this time in spades. I guess this is a drawback of this particular style and why it is not exactly my favourite. In my view the best way to drink it is to savour the aroma, drink a small mouthful, swill it around in your mouth for a bit and then drop dead of a heart attack.

Cask conditioned handpump Lower Red Lion St Albans 03/08/12. An amber coloured beer with an off-white pool of head. US hops prevalent throughout. Fruity berry flavours and sweet malts. A touch of acidity in the nose spoils it somewhat.

Cask conditioned at Far From the Madding Crowd, Oxford. Orange amber with white head. Big fruity beer, berries with fruit pulp notes slightly sweetish but not overly so, then a goodly amount of aromatic hops, flowery with touches of citrus. A very pleasant beer which hides its strength well. Good stuff.
