3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 arminjewell (4160) - Saudi Auroria, Colorado, USA - MAY 14, 2012
Pour on tap at the brewery, dark brownish black with thin tan head, aroma brought big cinnamon, clove, hints of vanilla, coffee and roast, slight chocolate and lactose as well, this is definitely a good blend of spices for the beer but it’s a bit much. Taste is similar, some slight chocolate, toffee, coffee and roast but dominated by cinnamon, clove, allspice notes, finishing fairly dry.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 onceblind (2535) - Denver, Colorado, USA - MAR 23, 2012
Black pour with a thin light brown head. Aroma was nice but confusing. Dark toasty roast malts mixed with some creamy light cinnamon and a touch of something spicy, I assume the chai (I never have had chai tea, so, shame on me.). Taste was much the same. Smooth and creamy with roasty dark malt tones, balanced by a tone of exotic spices and a touch of cinnamon creme.
3.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 rivertranced (25) - Denver, Colorado, USA - FEB 6, 2012
UPDATED: FEB 11, 2012 I was really looking forward to trying this beer and finally had the chance this weekend. One of my main questions was whether I could drink more than one of these before I got sick of the chai flavor, as I was considering brewing one up. And my answer is: probably not, sadly. However, Y&Y does a great job of keeping the chai flavor in moderation, such that it is really noticable in the nose and taste, but not overpowering. The version I tasted had absolutely no carbonation. I was given the beer head-free, and it proceeded to go head-negative almost. The beer was pretty tasty - I?d love to see them boost the sweetness (hotter mash?) to back up the chai flavor a bit more and to give it a little more mouthfeel.
5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20 yakandyeti (1) - Arvada, Colorado, USA - OCT 19, 2011 does not count
This stout is a based on an English milk stout which is creamier and more smooth than a dry stout. There is a residual sweetness due to the fact that brewer’s yeast cannot ferment lactose. The stout is balanced by deeply roasted barley and our own chai tea spices. A perfect dessert drink or digestif.
* caution: this beer contains lactose for those with intolerance
