On tap at the Grey Lodge. Poured a medium brownish/deep amberish color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of roastiness, chocolate, and some caramel. Tastes of the same roastiness, caramel, and a little earthy. Not bad for a 4% beer for sure.

An unnecessary nightcap on my first full day in Philly, drunk at some bar that I don’t have a prayer of remembering. Deep amber beer. Aroma is quite malty. Soft brown sugar sweetness with a kiss of treacle and light kettle caramelization. Hops are here and are earthy tasting, but this is very much a malt-dominated brew. Chewy toffeeish sweetness. It’s a pretty nice brew really. A touch of blackberry fruitiness that is quite subtle but that works well with these darker, toastier malts. A hint of molasses on the finish. This would make a nice session ale.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a slightly hazy purplish brown color with a thin head. Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, caramel and nuts. Taste is very similar, but with some bitter hop notes and faint fruits as well. Thin-medium bodied. Decent.
