COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Cape of Good Hope, which changes year to year, pays homage to the original style and adventurous spirit of the first British IPAs. This past yearís release, a west coast style double IPA, is brewed with 100% pilsner malt, imparting a subtle maltiness and beautiful golden color. Loaded with hops, thereís Columbus in the kettle and Centennial in the whirlpool. Then itís dry hopped with El Dorado, Calypso, and Galaxy, resulting in a dry, crisp ale with unmistakable flavors and aromas of tropical fruits. Doesnít match the hop listings Iíve seen elsewhere, right?

Bottled September 2, 2014.
Glass: Duvel tulip.
Appearance: Clear golden body with a dense and craterous white head. A very nice looking IIPA.
Aroma: Light sweetness coming through of malt and big juicy hop aromas. Some perfume and grass notes along with a pungent mixture of orange, mango, pear and grapefruit. Lovely.
Taste: The malt base is firm with a mild to moderate sweetness accented by a touch of caramel. The hops come off juicy with big orange juice up front and into the mid with a slightly spicy hop presence by the finish. Slightly floral and easy to drink, the bitterness is kept in check.
Palate: Medium to full-bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: A really solid imperial IPA and a good value when considering the price of imperial IPAs in todayís day and age. Definitely worth picking up.

2014 edition. On tap 9/25/14. Pours a slightly hazy straw with a fluffy and tight white head. Aroma is super fruity, grapefruit, citrus, nice. Taste is more of the same. Fruity, juicy, some biscuits, crisp, apples. Leaves you with a grapefruit bitterness and a touch of alcohol. Overall pretty solid. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From a bottle. Pours cloudy orange with a thick fluffy white head. Smells like caramel, floral hops, and some grapefruit. Tastes like bready malt, caramel, sweet red grapefruit, hints of alcohol, and strong bitterness. Light crispness, then smooth and a bit dry. Medium body and carbonation.

Initially tried this one in a cottonmouth state and thought it was terrible. Couldnít finish it, dumped it out. But now Iím back for round 2, ready to give this one a fair shake. Have to say that I donít historically like the British IPA. On to my $0.02.. You can tell by the color that pilsener malt was used. Looks like a Prima Pils. Soapy head, that orange hue with golden tinges. Aroma is underwhelming. Hints of some tropical fruit, but the booze is detectable in the nose. Malt profile is non-distinct. Flavor is quite bitter, with a lingering dryness. Pine with dank hop resin. Itís just too damn dry to really be enjoyable in my opinion. Could see myself doing 1 of these MAX. A little bit of a chore. Might be more of a cold weather beer. I like the concept but for me I would rather have the juicy/floral IPA varietal.

Transfer from BA review on 8-23-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance Ė The beer is served as a yellow-orange colored brew with a two finger foamy white head. The head has a fair level of retention, fading over time to leave a good leave of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell Ė The aroma is of a sweet citrus smell with some notes of a yeasty breadiness, some lighter pine aromas, as well as a decent grapefruit hop smell. With these is a little bit of caramel overall giving it a rather nice balanced smell. Taste Ė The taste begins with a biscuit and sweeter citrus flavor that create a base for the brew. Upfront there is a bit of grapefruit that grows stronger and stronger as the flavor advances to the end. More toward the middle of the taste, some flavors of pine begin sneaking their way onto the scene along with the advent of some caramel sweetness. While never matching the grapefruit hop the pine grows a bit stronger in intensity toward the end, where it is joined by some flavor of a light earthy hop to leave a bitter but still moderately sweet flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel Ė The body of the beer is rather creamy and thick with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A little less carbonation may have accentuated the beerís nice hop flavor profile a bit better, but with that said, the beers thicker body was spot on for the nice hoppy and bready flavors. Overall Ė Due to its nice blend of hops, malt, and sweeter flavors this is a rather nice and quite easy drinking Imperial.

Pours a clear gold color with minimal head and average at best lacing. Tastes bitter and hoppy like a DIPA should with a dry finish. A good beer, but on the scale of DIPAíS just alright.

Ugh. Nasty beer. By the good ratings, Iím thinking I must have a bad bottle. Aroma and taste both had this terrible black licorice taste/smell. I couldnít get past that and ended up dumping down the drain. The few sips I took seemed like I might be able to finish it and once the licorice flavor left it seemed like it might be an OK beer. Just couldnít do it

This is an above average IPA. the aroma is near perfect The head of this beer is white and fluffy, it also lasts for a while as well. The floral hopes stand out the most to me during the mouthful and during the finish. Out of the bottle it had low amounts of CO2. The color is orange to a rust color. A good beer and would recommend giving it a try.

The commercial description made this beer out to be something really special, and it just wasnít. I found it quite unremarkable. Itís a stronger-than-average IPA, but I find the strength comes mainly in the heaviness of the malt and the high alcohol content than in the hops or complexity. The hops have a slightly metallic character, leaving a metallic aftertaste. The aroma of this beer oddly suggests shredded dried coconut, uncannily so. Malt is very, very heavy. Ugh. I just didnít like this one at all and I am very disappointed, Iíd take any of Yards typical everyday beers over this one. Iíd even drink a typical macro-brew over this one. About the only thing I liked was the pleasant hazy appearance...something is very attractive about how it looks. It just doesnít taste good to me.
