Our Cape of Good Hope, which changes year to year, pays homage to the original style and adventurous spirit of the first British IPAs. This past yearís release, a west coast style double IPA, is brewed with 100% pilsner malt, imparting a subtle maltiness and beautiful golden color. Loaded with hops, thereís Columbus in the kettle and Centennial in the whirlpool. Then itís dry hopped with El Dorado, Calypso, and Galaxy, resulting in a dry, crisp ale with unmistakable flavors and aromas of tropical fruits. Doesnít match the hop listings Iíve seen elsewhere, right?

Pour is a hazy yellow with a large white head. Aroma is a decent pine hop resin. Flavor is much of the same. A decent hoppy resin with little or no malt backbone. Finish has a fleeting hop and maybe a little too much water. Maybe a bit thin but it will satisfy a hop crave.

Faint citrus smell not really heavy notes of any one thing which makes it interesting.pours orange to hazey straw color, minimal head. No big hop taste as another reviewer has noted but hides the alcohol.. mouthfeel has a fresh feeling. How yards accomplished such a smooth finish Iím not sure. A+

Bottle. Nose beautifully citric, heaviest grapefruit, juice and rind in balance, a little oil, and super inviting! Lightly hazy yellow-golden with a dense and creamy off-white head. Strong bitterness with medium hop sweetness, fullish body is also dense and creamy, all of that lovely grapefruit and lemon and adding on with some tropical edges: pineapple, passionfruit, mango. Light supportive caramel and a touch of fizzy crystal. Pine and smooth resin. Well-hidden etoh. Clean and awesome.

8/30/13 $3.29 @ CBO 2nd beer after goose island Oktoberfest Poured a copper orange minimum head. Smell was nice hoppy, citrusy, pine. On the sweet side. Not a big hop bomb nor the alcohol of a double ipa. Still a pretty good ipa ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 Fl. Oz. Bottle. Poured clear, Orange/Amber, nice white head and leaves lots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of strong citrus fruit, hoppy with maybe a bit of malts. Taste is pretty much the same, but it does has some sweetness towards the end. Easy to drink, a very nice IPA.

Draft at Khyber Pass. Mostly clear orange amber pour. Off-white frothy foam. Big hop flavors with a burnt vanilla caramel backbone. Pineapple rind. Mango pits. Chanterelles. Pinecones. Artichokes. Straw. Unripe oranges. Honey sweet but a strong bitter finish. Harsh but unique.

Poured into an American pint glass, color is orange-amber and slightly hazy, produces a clear white head that is thin but maintains itself well, plenty of lacing to go with it. The aroma is basic, piney with some malt and a little citrus. The taste is much the same, although the citrus is stronger and there are some hints of melon on the back end, itís also sweet but not overbearingly so. Medium-bodied and thinner than some of itís Imperial IPA counterparts, but it has the alcohol content to match them and it warms you all the way down. Overall, a good beer with a great name and a flavor that will linger on your palate.
