Bottle. Pours a flat black body, completely opaque, with a nice frothy and creamy tight bubbled light brown head that had excellent retention. The nose is rich and chocolatey with a great roasted malt character that doesn’t smell burnt at all. It’s slightly sweet smelling with such a nice chocolate character that it smells like dessert in a glass. Smells a bit like there’s a slight note of smoke in here, but I doubt that it’s smoked malt. The flavor is a pretty decent mix of slightly sweet chocolate and dry roasted malt. It seems a bit thin and lacking in body though, making it taste a little watery. I do like that it’s not overly sweet though, it tastes like cocoa nibs, and not milk chocolate. Finishes with a more roasty character and little brine like salty note. Lighter bodied with soft minimal carbonation. Not a bad beer, but I think if it had a bit more body, that would help.

Bottle from Spirits. Pours out an attractive almost black brownish color with a big tan head. Aroma is of burnt baker’s chocolate, overlooked brownie mix, and some toasty notes. Taste is of chocolate, roast, some brownie mix, overlooked cake, burnt toast, with some chalky notes and some mild sweetness. Meh,

From AC Beer Fest 2013. The aroma is chocolate, cocoa-like, a bit artificial. The appearance is deep brown, tan head. The flavor is chocolate, cherry, roasty. The finish is sweet, roasty. Decent.

No bottling information.
Appearance: The body is clear with a nice dark brown to black body. The head is tall and dense with a tan color, settling slowly into a creamy thick coating.
Aroma: The aroma leans dry with hints of cocoa, but strong aromas of either hops or a charcoal smokey aroma that comes off bitter and a touch astringent. It reminds me of peat smoke, not what I expected or want in this.
Taste: The flavor is a bit more cocoa than the aroma with more of a bittersweet presence than sweetness. There’s a slight peat smoke flavor near the finish, but it’s not overbearing. Not a fan though.
Palate: Medium bodied with a slightly creamy texture.
Overall: Not a fan of this. The smoke flavor throws this off completely. I wouldn’t buy this again.

Bottle, crown only, 1pt 9.36 fl oz and mine at 6.9% abv instead of the 5% listed here.. Nose of roast and baker’s chocolate with heavy overtones of raw, roasted cocoa - reminds a lot of fire-breathing chili pepper stouts, though only by association. A little wood, and methinks that there’s a nice hop burst coming. Deep, dark brown with a foamy tanned head. Taste is sweet and chocolaty, rich and sultry but the thin and airy body detracts from that enjoyment. Vanilla is subtle and pleasant, there’s still just a touch of woodiness here (but not "barrel"), it may be that I’m confusing that with the roast. The caramel profile here is different than usual, pairs very well with the chocolate in a match not unlike a decent truffel. No fruity esters or the like, this is straightforward silken stout.

750ml of disappointment. Aroma is ashy, earthy, wet nutts, bad chocolate. Light to medium body with almost no carbonation detectable, quicker fading aftertaste. Flavor isn’t better than the aroma with notes chocolate, roasty, lighter toast. Blah.

Bottle from wegs in state college. Very hoppy nose along with the chocolate. Unusual. Dark chocolate and vanilla and a bit of wood along with licorace in the palate. Nice dark rich appearance. I enjoyed this.
