Our first ever and most beloved brew, ESA helped establish a following for cask-conditioned beer in the United States back in the ‘90s. East Kent Golding hops give this English style ale a subtle spiciness, which compliments its strong malt backbone. Hints of chocolate and caramel round out this deep chestnut colored ale. Floral, earthy, smooth.

Pours a deep but clear reddish brown with an off white head. Aroma is of grapes an d roasted grain. Mouthfeel is full and the palate finishes clean. There's a slight yeasty taste that lingers but other than that its well balanced. I could buy a case of this. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark amber body, moderate sized off-white head, spotty lacing. Toffee, caramel, some nutty notes, hints of resinous hops. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, clean, semi-sweet finish, light bitterness.

12oz bottle in an English pint. Pours deep amber with a lacy, light beige head. Aroma of caramel and light toasted malts, some dough, and floral hops. Flavor the same, with a nice amount of all of the ingredients. Average texture. Not a bad beer.

Classic ale. Well done but nothing interesting. Good balance between hops and malts. Tastes very English =)

The aroma is interesting, it starts with floral hops, and then fades to dark fruits. Pours a clear reddish-amber, with a half inch of off-white head. Interesting flavor with fruit notes, biscuit notes, and just a touch of hops. Full bodied, and falls much more in line with an Amber then an ESB.

12oz bottle from Wegman’s, King of Prussia, PA. A reddish copper pour with a scummy cream head that laces the glass nicely - certainly looking like a cask ale; the aroma is richly vinous and appertisingly plummy; after a smooth sip, the taste explodes in the mouth - there’s some purple fruit, treacle toffee, brazil nuts and soft roasted malts; before a dry finish with some woody hops. This has to be the best English ESB style ale I’ve found in the States - it reminds me of the Fuller’s Vintage Ales.

Draft at Sugars. Dark amber pour with a foamy head that left some runny lace. Medium fruit from the malt. Dried strawberries. Toasted oats. Burnt Brazil nut shells. Red plums. Black peppercorns. Malty and bitter. Well enough, but feels too thin.

Bottled. Amber colour with a small slightly off-white head. Aroma is herbal, floral and mild grassy notes along with some crystal and bready notes. Flavour is crystal, caramel and some slight bready notes along with a mild nuttyness. Also some nice bitter floral and grassy hops in it. Stronger than the usual UK ESB, but otherwise quite true to the style (in a British way).
