Heathen (474), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Jul 29, 2008 THOUGHTS: Very British or I guess colonial in this case. I avoided this for a while because I wasn’t sure of the style. A nice ESB and a great hometown offering Can’t wait to try it on tap. Also my bottle said that the ABV was 5.5 not 6.3 as listed on this page.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a medium amber and was bottle conditioned with dark, small to medium particles that sat on the bottom of the glass even before the pour was done. There was a huge, fizzy and rocky, off-white head that slowly but mostly diminished and left good to fair lacing. The aroma was light to moderate cooke, toasted and caramel malt; moderate to heavy perfume and herbal hops; light earthy yeast; slight citrus and a little tea. The initial flavor was moderately sweet; while the finish was moderate to heavily sweet and bitter with and average duration. There was caramel malt, citrus (lemon), perfume, herbal and floral hops and some earthiness. Nice balance. The medium body was sort of foamy with tingly to fizzy carbonation and a light astringent and ever so slightly metallic finish. Beerded_one (1560), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA May 3, 2008 Draft. Pours amber in color with a one finger off white head. Aroma of malty sweetness, fruit, caramel and floral notes. Flavor is medium bodied and lightly bitter with toasted malts, light fruit, caramel and a touch of toffee. Decent brew TomDecapolis (2371), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 20, 2008 On tap at the Bishops Collar. Pours a lightly hazy amber with golden notes and a smaller bubbly/creamy white head that left some lacing. Aroma of grainy malts, light citrus notes, some caramel...light in aroma. Flavor of lightly toasted grains, cherrios, hop flavor and some light bitterness. Easy drinking flavorful ESB. bigrond (852), factoryville, Pennsylvania, USA Apr 5, 2008 I enjoyed this beer. I assumed when I ordered it that it was an ESB but when I recieved it....I thought it was a porter. When I tastsed it I knew it was a porter. I was wrong. It seems the styles are so ’blended’ and lines are so fuzzy that I have to judge a beer on its own merit and not as it applies to its own standard. As an ESB this was poor. As a porter it was dark, deep, and complex. Either way I enjoyed it and look forward to trying more from Yards checkmatei1 (234), Willow Grove, USA Feb 20, 2008 Bottle: Poured a dark copper color with a nice head. The aroma was a fruity hop. The flavor was a little piney and woody with a bitter hop finish. Great for its style, but not one I could drink on a regular basis.
