Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish

Pours an opaque coffee brown that lets daylight through only at the bottom and has a thick light tan head. Aroma has a strong note of molasses, plus tones of roast malt, caramel, and miso. Flavor echoes the molasses and roast malt of the aroma, though the other tones are not quite as strong; some sweetness comes through. Texture is smooth, if a bit thin, and fairly fizzy. A toast to the Father of this country, and his great ideas - may we recapture and remember them!

Very, very bland for a porter, especially a relatively high ABV porter. I believe that General Washington would be disappointed; I certainly am.

A clear dark brown pour with a light one finger head. Aroma isn’t too strong but contains hints of roasted malts, slight butter and chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet and malty with a slight bitter finish. Medium body and a refreshing porter

From a bottle. Pours dark brown with a thick, bubbly tan head and lots of lacing. Tastes like light burnt toast and roasted coffee bitterness. Smooth with light creaminess. Light body and low carbonation. Smells like light sweet and roasted chocolate and coffee with light booze.

Bottle from sampler pack. Pours deep, cola brown with thick, frothy beige head; good lacing. Aroma is roasted and chocolate malts, earthy notes, light ash, raisins, and prunes. Flavor is rich roast and chocolate notes, dark fruit esters, faint smoke, and light earthy bitterness; dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Sweeter than I expected. Has some licorice and chocolate. Nice and black appearance with tan head. Picked this up at Mt. Vernon in 2014.

Brown pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is light roasted malt and a touch of coffee. Flavor is pretty hard roasty malt with a nice medium/hard bitter finish. A tad thin and watery but pretty solid beer.

12 oz bottle. Pours a nice mahogany color with a frothy tan head. Aroma is of caramel, chocolate, and coffee. Taste is of caramel, molasses, licorice, coffee, and leaves a quick, dry finish I would say a bit distinct, not the same old porter.
