Yards has recreated General Washington Tavern Porter - a dark beer brewed with molasses. General George Washington originally created this porter to satisfy the thirsts of his field officers. Washington's fondness for Colonial Philadelphia-style porter is reflected in this historic recipe.

Pours a deep mahogany body beneath a slow-settling, quiche-like, tan head. Pleasant aroma of Nestle Quik, Ovaltine, prunes, Marschiano cherry and a wee splash of rum. Substantial body, thick and luscious, thinning out slightly as the palate adjusts. Solid flavor focuses on roasted malts and chocolate syrup, with a dark-fruit pucker and a Rauchbier smokiness late. Its 7% ABV remains fairly well concealed. This is a damn fine Porter and I’m surprised it’s not showing better numbers. ~~~~~~~~ Variety 24 pk./12 oz. btls., random bottleshop, Paoli, PA

A quaffable porter. Nothing particularly interesting. Probably much better than what 18th century beer drinkers consumed. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle into English pint glass, deep black (somewhat reddish) with light tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, burnt marshmallow and minimal dark coffee. Taste adds some notes of char, molasses, milk chocolate with some earthy hop bitterness. Light body, low-moderate carbonation, creamy, ashy with roasty finish. Decent porter, leaning towards the burnt ashy notes.
