COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Detailed in a letter from the General to his officers during the war, Washington’s recipe employed molasses to aid fermentation and give rich caramel notes to this robust, roasty ale. The recipe reflected his admiration for Philadelphia-style porters, especially those brewed by Robert Hare (whose original brewery stood just blocks from where ours is now). Our Tavern Porter, inspired by Washington’s, is dark, smooth, and complex with just a hint of dried fruit in the finish

Pours a deep mahogany body beneath a slow-settling, quiche-like, tan head. Pleasant aroma of Nestle Quik, Ovaltine, prunes, Marschiano cherry and a wee splash of rum. Substantial body, thick and luscious, thinning out slightly as the palate adjusts. Solid flavor focuses on roasted malts and chocolate syrup, with a dark-fruit pucker and a Rauchbier smokiness late. Its 7% ABV remains fairly well concealed. This is a damn fine Porter and I’m surprised it’s not showing better numbers. ~~~~~~~~ Variety 24 pk./12 oz. btls., random bottleshop, Paoli, PA

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours black, red hues when held to strong light. One finger off white silky head. Moderate lacing but nice retention. Aroma of roasted malts and dark chocolate. Taste is nicely balanced, sweet malts with an even bitterness. Medium bodied, moderate carbonation, creamy mouth feel. Finishes long and smoky. Tasting notes of burnt sugars, dark roasted coffee and malts, vanilla, dark chocolate and toffee. A very nice and complex porter!

Bottle. Pours dark brown. Med sized tan head. Aroma of roast and molasses. Flavor is dark toast. Good palate. Rich and creamy. My wife picked this up from the gift shop at Mt. Vernon while we were on a trip. Based on that I didn’t have high expectation, however I was wrong. This was a very nicely done porter that I really enjoyed. Only disappointment is that I only had the one. Certainly something I would try again.

Pours jet black and has excellent lacing and a nice creamy head. Smells like burnt coffee and hazelnut. Tastes like bitter chocolate and coffee. I like this quite a bit.

Light brown pour from bottle. Looks dark once in glass. Small of white head, good lacing. A little bland on the aroma. Mouth feel is a tad light for my liking. Flavor is solid. Solid beer Just not special. Easy drinking regardless.

12 ounce bottle. Translucent dark brown color. Small light tan head. Nice clinging lace. Nose is cocoa malt and coffee. Upfront, flavor is sweet roasted malt with a touch of milk chocolate, raisins, molasses and citrus hops. Medium bodied with roasted malt and coffee notes. Finishes dry and bittersweet with a cloying sticky mouthfeel.

Poured a very deep brown into an English pint with a tan head and lace. Aroma was roasted malts and a slight coffee and toffee note. Taste is same but the roast of the malts come out strong. Slight alcohol note. Warming in the finish. A little on the sweet side on the draw and a little dry in the finish. The roast is the lingering note big time. A different but pleasant take on a porter. Enjoyed the history ride.

Drank from the bottle. Aroma consists of roasted malts, caramel, and coffee. Notes of chocolate and dark fruit come through in the taste. The beer is not too sweet nor too bitter. Medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation and an oily mouth feel. Nice beer.
