Olde Bart was a free spirit who bent elbows with the best of ‘em. We’ve made this amber-hued, English style Barleywine ale for characters like him. Brewed with 100% Maris Otter malt (a traditional floor-malted English barley) and noble hops, Olde Bartholomew is an unfiltered winter warmer with a smooth malt background, soft fruit overtones and a slight hop spice in the finish. Just a few sips are sure to arouse the character in all of us. 22°
AVAILABILITY: November through January beginning in odd years

Lower rating only cuz it isn’t as much of the barley wine as expected. More hoppy and thick, but not exactly a barely wine. Great taste and smooth. Shocking percent. Nice alcohol sugar aroma of plums and crystallized cranberry plus starfruit but boozy. Taste is heavy and some hops. High orange color. Tap

Back Log. Sample from neighbors cooler. Notes of Earth, bread, honey caramel and dark fruit, plum and raisin. Not a bad representation of the style.

Roasty malt and pete aroma. Light off white head and light amber body. Flavors of roasty coffee, carmel malt, and dry spice. Smooth with a little heat.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Oak Tree, 12/6/14

Aroma: The aroma is caramel and toffee malts, a little toast, butterscotch, booze, and light citrus
Appearance: It pours a mostly clear orange-gold with a sheet of off-white head and decent lace
Flavor: The taste is along the same lines, rather sweet, with some soft bitterness
Palate: The body is medium, with a soft carbonation, light heat, and a smooth finish
Overall Impression: A bit of time has helped mellow this one nicely. I still don’t love the flavor combination, but the feel is in the right zone at this point in its life cycle.

Transfer from BA review on 12-29-13- Poured from 750 ml bottle into a snifter Appearance – The beer pours a clear reddish-amber/copper color with a one finger of a creamy just off white colored head. The head has a good level of retention, slowly fading to leave lots of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The beer has a quite big aroma of lighter fruits with apple, pear and peach all there. Along with these aromas are some caramel as well as some dark fruit smells of cherry and plum. A little bit of a bready smell is there as well and when mixed with the rest of the sweet and a hint of alcohol it has an overall quite sweet and almost cidery like smell. Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter fruit flavor mixed with a little bit of a bready flavor. The sweeter fruits are largely of an apple and pear flavor with some flavors of cherry and plum in there as well. As the taste advances, the fruit flavors begin fading with a caramel and toffee flavor replacing them. Like the fruit, the caramel, which makes its max presence at the middle of the taste, begins to decline toward the end. As the sweeter flavors decline, some hop flavors of a grassy and herbal nature begin coming to the tongue. At the end, some other hop flavors of an earthy nature join the taste profile along with a little bit of a rubbing alcohol like taste to really bitter out the flavor. In the end, the mix of flavors that is left on the tongue, leaves one with a slightly sweet, hot, and moderately hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and chewier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both the thicker body and lower carbonation are fantastic for the style and rather nice for the flavors upfront as they really allow all the sweeter flavors to linger on the tongue. While the feel isn’t perfect for the later flavors of the brew it is overall pretty nice with a feel that is overall good for the beer. Overall – A rather decent barleywine. The starting flavors are very distinct from the later flavors in the taste. The smooth and fruity flavors upfront are quite nice while the later flavors are just OK. An interesting barleywine that is worth trying at least once.

Typical m.o. Cigar and barley wine. While not disappointing, somewhat uninspiring BW. Pleasant enough, but compared to other offerings comes up wanting. It could almost be deemed a ’lite’ or summer BW. I would not expect this to warm on a cold night. I might be jaded by the hammer to the head BWs and so should compare to real live British barley wines before passing final judgement. If you want to drink a NOT double IPA this might be your quench. Recommended.

Gold pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is light dried fruit and sweet malt with a touch of abv. Flavor mirrors aroma with a sweet start and nice resiny bitter finish. Medium/full bodied with good carbonation. Solid
