Contrary to its name, Rival’s ingredients work in perfect harmony for a bold, balanced IPA. The recipe starts with a base of pale crystal and rye malts, and Bravo and Nugget bittering hops. Then whole flower Chinook hops go into the hopback, extracting that signature pine character. Finally, Rival is dry hopped with Centennial, Citra, Simcoe and Columbus hops, giving this amber-colored IPA a complex citrus profile.

Pours amber orange with a half finger white head which fades to just a little lacing aroma Is of citrus, pine, slightly spicy rye, bready malts, grassy hops, and light sweet malts. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma. Has a medium body with a semi creamy mouthfeel and a semI dry, semi bitter, medium-long finish. Overall, a pretty sold beer that is a good fall ipa.

Bottle from Giant Exton. See through bronze and half-way white head. Pine, citrus, bread, malt and hop aroma. It’s got plenty of earth to it in the flavor. The pine, spruce, rye and wheat, but it has some sweetness to go with the hop, citrus, melon and caramel. A bottom line resin flavor drives it home. Nice stuff.

Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with a two finger, pillowy white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap/ring. Excellent retention with streaks of soapy lacing coating the glass on the way down. Looks very good. Slightly spicy sweet malt aroma that’s surprisingly lacking in hop character. Slightly floral with subtle earthy pine and hints of fresh cut grass but the rye and sweet malt notes nearly completely overpowers all of the hop character. There’s supposedly bravo, nugget, chinook, centennial, Citra, simcoe and Columbus but I’m struggling to pick up much of a hop presence. Lots of rye and caramel along with toffee, roasted nut, toast and caraway seed. Not offensive but the nose is very disappointing. On the lighter end of medium body with a subtle spicy rye presence along with a delicate earthy hop presence that is almost completely overpowered by the prominent sweet malt bill. Dry with some lingering bitterness complimented by peppery rye before the strong malt backbone takes over. Strong rye and caramel sweetness along with some roasted almond, toffee, hazelnut and a touch of dark fruit. Overall, this beer is somewhat decently balanced and easy to drink but the hop presence is severely muted. Not a bad beer but kind of disappointing offering from a solid brewery. I wouldn’t order this beer again.

After Wookie Jack, this was destined to disappoint, but while not Wookie Jack, it is still mighty tasty. Rye is prevalent in nose and taste. Hops mix in nicely. Slight pine and floral notes. Taste the Brotherly Love, Philly.

Rich light brown and a deep copper and bronze body with a bright pumpkin coloured glow and a thinnish, single centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rye (what else?), grain, alcohol, hops, earth and a touch of caramel and brown sugars. Medium-bodied; Assertive grain and rye flavour with some mellow earth and a little sweetness and a touch of hops noticeable. Aftertaste is relatively simple with a touch of sugars and some faint rye and hops - nothing special here. Overall, a pretty disappointing beer with not much hops, not much rye and no complexity at all. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 02-August-2015 for US$1,99 sampled at home in Washington on 24-September-2015 to celebrate the Pope coming to Philadelphia (and Washington/New York).
