Saisons were originally brewed to keep farmhands happy and hydrated during the warm summer months. True to the style, Yards’ Saison is a semi-unfiltered Belgian style ale brewed with distinctive Belgian yeast. It’s delicate and fruity with a subtle spiciness. Styrian Goldings in the kettle lend a touch of hop to the palate, balancing out this highly drinkable version of the classic style. Available April through July or until supplies last.

Pours a yellowish color with a white head. Smells like peppercorns. I like peppercorns. Taste has a bunch of yeast and wheat in it. Little bits of pepper. Different from the other saisons I have drank.

12oz bottle from State Line. Pale straw gold pour, with a crisp and fairly frothy carbonation. Youthful and quite fresh is the appearance. Nose is only faintly sweet, and conveys for the most part the dry hops and yeast that I crave. Body is slightly too prickly in places, but not overwhelmingly so. I enjoyed the interplay of yeasts and malts in the initial wave of the flavors, but the brew tended to get rather one-dimensionally dry and spicy from there. That’s certainly a single dimension I vastly prefer to others - grassy over sweet every time for a saison - but it’s hard to conclude that this is anything other than average.

Had the early 2007 version quite a while ago. Looks like a good hefe in the glass. Somewhat metallic farm instrument aroma. Taste is bright, lots of sharper bitter stuff going on there. Good carbonation. Goes creamy during the session. Lots of bitter unripe green odd citrus rind thing doing it to ya. Good overall experience.

Tap. Hazy brighter light yellow with a fluffy white head. Aroma is mostly mealy and grain, with some light fruit notes. Flavor follows the same lines as the aroma, but a touch of slight sour and a sweeter finish. Lighter to medium body with bubbly carbonation. Not bad.

Bottle from a trade with Steeeve. Pours cloudy dark golden color with white head. Aromas of Belgian yeast, bananas and some spices. Spicy flavor with some bread dough, bananas and cloves. Medium body with lively carbonation. Thanks Steve.

Bottle. A slightly hazy copper pour with a smallish beige head. A sweet aroma full of candied sugar, bubblegum, some coriander, bananas, cloves, lemon, wheat, and a good bit of yeastiness. Goes down thin to medium-bodied and crisp. The taste starts with plenty of sweet candied sugar, bubblegum, and a little caramel. Grainy in the middle. The finish is crisp and wheaty with lots of lemons, limes, citrus rinds, and a dash of pepper. A yeastiness throughout. Quite refreshing.

I’ve had the 2009 earlier version, and I remembered how much I enjoyed that brew. Well, this one is no different! Cloudy, thick, citrusy saison, hint of hoppy citrus malts. Many people add an orange, which gives it another flavor. Well done. Yards is definitely an underrated brewery.
