COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This powerful and complex golden ale pays homage to Founding Father and fellow brewer, Thomas Jefferson. Yards Brewmaster, Tom Kehoe, worked closely with Philadelphia’s historic City Tavern to recreate this recipe, employing honey, rye, and wheat, just like the beer Jefferson made at Monticello.

Bottle. The pour was a clear medium brown with a slight orange hue and an average (1-2 finger) off-white creamy head that lasted a decent time, finally reducing to a large puddle with a medium collar and had good streaky lacing. The aroma was of a toasted caramel malt, citrus hops and a doughy yeast with notes of toffee, dark fruit (grapes and plums) and possessed a slight alcohol tinge. The taste very lightly sweet and a bit malty with a hint of toffee from the start, then slowly became exceptionally bitter with a note of dark fruit and a bitter citrus peel ending. The flavor lasted a decently long time after the swallow, with a strong bitterness left lying on the taste buds. Mouthfeel was between light and medium in body and slightly dry in texture with a medium carbonation. Overall a good powerful tasting brew with a nice bitter malty fruitiness...

Bottle to shaker glass. Pours amber golden, two finger head with some lacing. Aroma of is peppery with honey and caramel notes. Taste is complex yeasty sweet, only a slight spruce bitterness. Medium body, moderate carbonation, slightly sticky mouth feel. Finishes sweet with notes of caramel, yeast, apple, sour cherry, honey and slight alcohol. Good beer but I would prefer more hops but I’m not T J.

12 ounce bottle. Deep orange gold color. Foamy beige head of two fingers high. Nice clinging lace. Aroma is slightly fruity malt with a slight rye grain and baked bread touch. Complex, fruity toasted malt flavor has notes of honey, rye, nuts and citrus hops. A mouthful of complexity. Some alcohol taste in finish.

Golden pour into Belle-Vue snifter. Up front aroma of honey and some floral notes. Bready with a spicy rye flavor. A nice honey sticky sweetness in the finish. It is amazing to think Thomas Jefferson was brewing ale of this quality. Feels like getting a taste of history.

On tap. Pours an amber-red with a white head. Sweet and tart aroma, of cherries, yeast, apples, malt. Crisp taste, lots of yeast, malt, berries. Lingering crisp yeast. Nice.

Reviewed from notes. This was poured into a mug. The appearance was a semi-dark hazy reddish brown color with a one finger white foamy head that dissipated within about a minute. There was some light lacing running around in some clingy rings. The smell had a light caramel sweet maltiness here and there. A little honey and Rye help to complement. The taste took those previously mentioned flavors and gave a decent wheat in the flavor. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation was somewhat there to provide a good rounded edge of bite. Overall, pretty good American Strong ale I’d have again.

Bottle from trade with jtclockwork, many thanks James. Dark amber golden color with medium off-white head. Malt, caramel in aroma together with notes of liquor. Taste, sweet malt, caramel, nutty notes, alcohol. Light hoppy bitterness in finish. Good.

Gold pour with creamy white head and lace. Aroma is sweet caramel malt and floral hops. Sweet caramel malt with light fruity esters. A touch of floral hops on the end. Medium body with food carbonation. A very light bitter finish too. I wish there was more hops here

Transfer from BA review on 8-16-12 - Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer was served a medium amber color with a one finger white head. The head had a decent retention and faded to give a very nice level of lacing. Smell – The aroma was bready with hints of a buttery toffee and some light citrus and herbal hop aromas. Taste – The taste was as would have been perceived from the nose. Very malt forward with a light caramel flavor that greets the tongue. The sweetness soon becomes more buttery in nature, almost more of a toffee like flavor while the bready malt flavor remains strong. More towards the middle of the taste a lighter herbal and grassy hop flavor meet the tongue. While the brew is at 8% abv it does not have much of an alcohol presence and in the end one is left with a herbal bread taste on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker side with the carbonation level rather low. The lower carbonation and thicker more creamy body help accentuate the bready characteristics of the beer and are quite fitting. Overall – Much easier to drink then I would have expected with a decent flavor profile. Not too shabby.
