Always been a big fan of Yards, maybe not the best technical brewery and not overly adventurous with the styles brewed, but there’s just something endearing about the Philly beer scene. Not that Yards is a big player there, nor even much of a player at all. In that vein, then, you have a pretty basic strong dubbel with the dryness of some of the stronger trippels and that strength as well. The pour is fine, the nose satisfyingly phenolic, but it just comes with too much booziness and dry, peppery phenols. The nutty, somewhat scratchy malt notes do nothing to help and I’m left with but another American abbey ale, which is to say, not an abbey ale at all. Perhaps this bottle would have been better fresh? Seems like alcohol persistence is going to dominate no matter the age. The mouthfeel, as can be assumed, is quite slick and lacks the malt depth/richness to keep interest.

From tap. Pours dark brown with a dense and creamy off white head. Aroma is roasted malty and slight fruity. Caramelish. Fruity phenolic/estery. Roasted dry and dark malty finish.

UPDATED: JAN 7, 2015 A dark reddish-brown color. Some lace. Aroma of dark fruits, sugar, trees, malt and tons of booze. Flavor is yeast, alcohol, fruits, earth, chocolate malts. I keep thinking a log. Maybe wet leaves or something. Orgasmic wet leaves that is. Finish is boozy and sticky. Excellent feel.

Sampled on draft this beer poured a caramel-amber color with a medium sized creamy orange-tan head that left great lacing. The aroma was tart and fruity with notes of pez, citric acid and grapefruit. The flavor was tart, bit sour and fairly chalky with notes of pez, citrus, grapefruit and yeast. Pretty dry. Long finish. Medium body. Quite disappointing.

About a 1 inch thick light brown head of fine bubbles. Sweet malts, fresh cut grass, light spice and some fruit esters. Color is a dark mahagony brown with a hint of red in the background. Considerable malt backbone with some dried fruit, spices, roasted grains and yeast. All the characteristics of a fine belgian dubbel. Light alcohol presence and warming. Finishes with lots of soft malts and lingering spices. A pretty good dubbel.

On tap at Cantwells. I did not expect Yards to be able to pull of a legit Belgian style beer. This is great. Dark and fruity with a nice earthy character. Nice Belgian yeastiness. I liked it a lot.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a murky brown color with some light hints of red within. Upon pouring there is a tan colored head of about one finger height. The head is composed of lots of fizzy bubbles fading fast to leave some light streaking lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is heavy of darker fruits with plum, cherry and raisin. Along with the fruit there is a rather strong roasted malt aroma as well as sweeter smells of toffee and candied sugar. Rounding out the smell is an aroma of yeast bringing with it some notes of coriander and clove spice as well as some banana.
Taste – The taste begins with a sweet and roasted malt flavor upfront. The sweet is heavier of a caramel and toffee flavor at the start, but transitions to being more dominated by some darker and lighter fruits more toward the middle and the end of the taste. Along with the fruits coming into the tongue, so too does some spice flavors of clove and coriander with just a hint of yeast. A chocolate flavor develops more at the end of the tongue and is joined by some warming boozy alcohol tastes to end up leaving a sweet and darker malt flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is average to slightly high. The combination is very nice for the darker and warming flavors of the brew all while complimenting well the fruitiness of the beer.
Overall- Very dubbel like in nature but with a bit more potency and some notes of a triple mixed within. A rather enjoyable brew for sure.

THOUGHTS: A very nice and interesting beer. An interesting idea, too, to merge the two styles. Not as good as the blending of the two styles could be, but it was very easy to drink. Hid alcohol quite well. Incredible how it has the actual flavors of a dubbel but the lighter mouth feel like a tripel.
TECHNICAL: Drank 3/18/2013. Bottle. Poured a clear, very dark red that basically looked dark brown in the glass with an average, tan head that mostly diminished and left excellent lacing. The aroma contained heavy dark bread, grain, molasses, caramel and chocolate; moderate doughy and spicy yeast; raisin; cherry; brown sugar; and dark fruit. The initial flavor was lightly acidic, slightly bitter and moderately sweet; while the finish was heavily sweet, lightly acidic and slightly bitter with a fairly long duration. There was dark bread, caramel, brown sugar, raisins, molasses, spices, toast, chocolate, yeast, bread, cake, spicy yeast, dark fruit, cherry, sweet tobacco, doughy yeast, slightly sour fruit and slight alcohol. The medium to full body was slightly syrupy and sticky on the lips with lightly fizzy carbonation, that softens with each sip, and a lightly alcoholic finish.
