We set a portion of every batch of General Washington’s Tavern Porter aside in freshly emptied bourbon barrels shipped straight from Kentucky. There, the beer ages for three months, absorbing vanilla, oak and bourbon flavors from the barrel walls. The end result is our Washington’s Reserve, a smooth, aromatic porter with hints of dried fruit in the finish and vanilla on the nose. Alc. 7.0% by Vol.

Nice & soft on the palate. Good aroma & very nice pour. The bourbon is subtle but adds a nice twist on the style. Good stuff!

Pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma has loads of toasted coconut and some vanilla...very bourbon forward without the booziness. Flavor follows suit but a bit more bourbon and whiskey with less toasty coconut...good roastiness and a touch of burnt molasses. Mouthfeel is light / medium and the finish is roasty/boozy with faint hints of vanilla and coconut.

Tasted 2/28/15 at Yards Brewing Tasting room. From tap was served in chalice. Very little head. Very dark almost black appearance. Nice aroma consisting of notes of vanilla and chocolate. Roasted malty taste of vanilla, chocolate and bourbon. Well balanced, nothing was overwhelming including the alcohol or bourbon. Nice smooth cocoa finish. Was very impressed with this beer and would definitely drink again. Unfortunately this barrel aged versions availability is very limited. Seasonally aged and only available in kegs, they do not currently bottle it.

At Piper's Pub in Pittsburgh. Dark brown, with very thin beige head. Oak and vanilla. Nicely aged. Good one. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Draft at Good Dog. Opaque black pour with off-white foam. Feels much larger, fuller and thicker than the normal version. Having said that, the barrel aged notes feel somewhat faint. Some oaky vanilla bourbon is there but it does not dominate. Medium-dark caramel flavors. Chocolate liquorice. Peppers. Coffee cola. Not much aroma. Flavors are running a bit bland, but still a big improvement on the original.

Deep brown or garnet in color with a small but dense foam cap. Appears to be nicely carbo’d but it’s hard to tell. It is quite dark. Smells thickly of rich malts toffee caramel and some roastiness. Hops are a non-issue here. Tastes rich and sweet, you can definitly pick up the molasses sweetness. A dry finsih. A full bodied beer here, it pours thickly into my glass and offers plenty of alcohol warming. Good lacing through out this tasting. It reminds me a lot of what the base brew for Anchor Christmas ale would taste like before they add all the twigs and stuff.

Served on-tap at Al’s of Hampden.

A - Pours jet black with a decent one finger tall cream colored head, slowly dissipating down to a light film, leaving sticky webs of lace down the sides of the glass.

S - Smells of warm bourbon, dark roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, molasses and a bit of dark fruit. A bit slow to develop but decent enough once it does.

T - Starts off with the vanilla and chocolate sweetness quickly being joined by the molasses, dark fruits, dark roasted malt and mild bourbon burn. Finish is a little sweet with some light dryness from the booze, lingering long after the finish.

M - Medium-Heavy body with moderate carbonation. Smooth, dark feel with a bit of booze burn at the end of each sip.

O - I would say this is more of mild bourbon porter. The bourbon profile is quite restrained and the base flavors are still quite noticeable. Haven’t seen this one before, glad I tried it while I had the chance.

Draught. This is seriously bourbony brew with lots of flavour and warmth and thick malts.
