Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Yates' flagship bitter taking its name from the address. It is primarily seasoned with Golding hops, but a charge of Fuggles is added late in the boil. This is differs from most brewers who use this classic combination, the Goldings are usually added last for the aroma.
Ingredients: Optic plae malt, crystal malt, chocolate malt, torrefied wheat. Goldings and Fuggles hops.

Bottled. Clear amber, airy head. Resiny nose. Sweet spritzy and fizzy with some rounde malt underneath. Notes of sulphur, lemon and yeast. Harsh resiny finish. Disappointing.

Cask conditioned @ South Western Arms, Soton. Mid brown. Rounded malts and caramel with a few initial hints of peardrops on the nose. Some mild sweetness balanced with nuttiness and light hops. Not bad but quite unoticeable.

[Cask at GBBF 2005] A hazy brown beer with a small off-white head. The aroma is sweet malty and slightly roasted, while the flavor is sweet with light notes of metal, caramel, and roasted malt, leading to a dry end.

Caramel and toffee malts with orange-citrus hops in the musty, damp nose. Clear amber copper with low, off white head that diminishes to very slight ring. Some chocolate malt flavour contrasts with herbal, leafy hops and light finishing bitterness. Light body with somewhat low carbonation. Straight forward and rather unexciting. Cask (gravity) at GBBF 2005.

On tap at GBBF 05. Dark gold, with a farmyard (i.e. bad) aroma. Cold, lagery, tinny, 1-dimensional, boring. Slight bitterness and that’s it.

Attractive bright amber colour. A decent best bitter with a good balance of soft malt and hop bitterness. Some citric notes. But as maeib say, there’s not really anything to make it stand out from the pack. Cask (gravity dispense), Cambridge Beer Festival, May 2005.

Cask conditioned at the 32nd Cambridge Beer Festival, gravity dispense. Brownish golden colour. Complex aroma of blackcurrants, blackberries and hay, some sherry too. Malty flavour with tolerable hops, hints of blackcurrant leaves and marsala (Italian fortified wine). Very moderate hops in the finish, slightly dusty.
