3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Brigadier (1837) - Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA - MAY 25, 2010
On draft
Stopping at the Flying Saucer in downtown Memphis I tried two local Tennessee releases. Figuring that the pale ale would be the most modest of the two I ordered it first. Despite missing the happy hour prices it was still only $4.50 which isn’t bad at all for a beer bar. The brewery itself was nothing special but if I had to live in the area it would work in a pinch. I wish there had been bigger styles than a pale and vienna available. Oh well.
Aroma / Appearance - The golden mildly carbonated body was nearly ideal. A dense eggshell head kept the aromas in check for a few minutes while I stared out on Beale Street. Rose petals, grassy aspects, and a respectable hop presence gave this some kick. Well rounded and balanced it was right on the spot.
Flavor / Palate - Caramel dipped cotton balls were a novel experience but not offputting as you might expect. Butterscotch transitioned to an easy going floral finish. Light on the back of the throat it was possible to detect the aftertaste without having it wear on the palate. If this were happy hour I’d have no problems ordering these at $2.75 each.

This poured a darker yellow to orange color with a white head. Aroma pretty bland malt, a bit of biscuts, and some grassy hops. Flavor was light bittering hops, some caramel and bready notes. Nothing offensive but nothing special at all either.

Deep amber with a big fluffy head. Aroma is very sweet, hoppy, and citrusy. Flavor has lots of strong malt backbone with a good mouth-filling stinging from the strong hops in it. Very downable with a great hop presence. On tap at Mellow Mushroom, Murfreesboro.

12oz. Bottle from trade with Suttree: Faint aroma of malt.
Poured orange/amber in color with a small, creamy, off-white head that diminished but lasted throughout. Clear. Lightly sparkling. A few small particles. Good lacing. Flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, hops, and grain. Medium body. Dry texture. Average carbonation. Malt, hop, and grain finish is dry. A simple, boring, but drinkable APA.

Fair head retention and lacing. Aroma of pale bready malts, herbal hops and a bit of spice. The taste is citrus and herbal hops with pale malts in the background. Rather tart throughout. Medium bodied.
