12 oz. Opaque ebony with a lasting quarter inch of foam. Aroma is lightly bitter cocoa, berry, espresso with cream, and hints of char and green spicy herb. Flavor has a bit more peppery spice. Along with the char and espresso, the rye provides a good balance to the big toasted malt, lightly fruity English ale yeast, and lactose notes. Medium body is well balanced, has a bit too much carbonation for my tastes, but is overall an interesting and very sessionable porter.

Comfortably toasty. Nothing overpowering about this one, just a solid porter. Goes great with a little dark chocolate as an after dinner beer.

Bottle. Pours a deep reddish brown with a slight but long lasting off white head. Aroma of chocolate, toasted caramel, and nuts. Nice bready rye flavor that is a good match for the malt. Interesting and long finish.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft. Deep brown body with a tan head, rapidly diminishing. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, caramel with a hint of rye bread. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Medium body, watery texture, moderate carbonation. A sweet porter that is thin in the mouth as compared to richer porters like Founders. Still, tastes of malt and chocolate and coffee with a bit of rye twang.

Taste is also dominated by spicy rye notes with some dry roasted m alt notes with light black chocolate notes. Body is about average with good carbonation. Well brewed with rye contributing some interesting complexity.

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2014 Some chocolate in the aroma. Quite dark. Smoky also. This is a pretty interesting beer. Sticky, yet not cloying. It’s a bit different but no in the same manner as other rye beers I’ve had. Okay, not great. I type that sentence a lot about rye beer.
