3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Another shameless rating for the sake of the tick on the style. Nice surprise though, as I’d never have picked this from the shelf if depended on the attractiveness of the label. Great looking beer, murky copper with a creamy head that one could lay a two-dollar dollar coin on and it would stay. Lovely sweet aromas of flan, vanilla and passion fruit dessert topping. Malty flavours, with biscuits, allspice, and a herbal bitterness with bourbon (sorry, not single malt). The alcohol is not inconspicuous and the finish is rather smooth. There’s a nice, round, resinous feel to the body. I’d love to try a "real" Scottish ale (from Scotland, I mean). I just hope they are as good as this one.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
330ml bottle. Pours a hazy ruby amber, with a small off-white head, which lasts reasonably well and leaves decent lacing. Floral hops sit over a base of rye toast, hazelnut and mild biscuit malt notes in the aroma. Spicy and floral hops up front lead into rich hazelnut and toffee malt in the mid-palate. Toasted rye and spicy hops make up the finish, which leaves a toasty aftertaste. This is a pleasant and satisfying malty ale.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Deep clear amber with a fine white head.
Candy like malt, honey, caramel and huge floral and tropical hops.
Rich toasty malts, biscuit, honey and salted caramel. A great fresh hop bitterness, light resins and some tropical fruits.
The finish is a little creamy and good dose of kiwi hops cut through the rich maltiness.

A great beer to contrast with the hoppy brews that are more popular at the moment. The big tastes are balanced nicely and invite one to have another.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Very sweet caramel aroma, very much an amber or red ale smell. In aroma and taste, this sweetness calms down after half a glass as the light-medium bitterness starts balancing things out. Also at this stage I start getting very faint hints of brine. Pine pulled from the ocean after a storm, maybe. 330ml bottle is too small. Like my favourite amber ales, this one is just starting to cook when you finish the bottle. I wonder if I had another bottle now, would my rating get higher? At 6.8%, I know *I* would get higher.
