3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Jimthechap (1195) - Christchurch, - NOV 25, 2012I enjoyed the preceding Ravens and enjoyed the compare and contrast elements of NZ and US hops varietals. I see this as a beer that relaxes and enjoys the best of both elements. Deep black with port notes and a skim of cream coloured head. Aromas tend toward the orchard fruits of the Motueka Raven along with dates plum and chocolate. Full and plummy in the mouth and then apricots, peaches and dried fruits on a silky body. Not many indicators of the IPA nature but for all that, richly Porterish in nature. I love Porter. I also thoroughly enjoyed this beer,
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Scopey (3248) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAY 8, 2013
Bottle at CGarvie tasting. It pours dark brown with a small beige head. The nose is mellow roast, caramel, berry and sweet jam. The taste is smooth roast, toast, caramel, dark fruit, bitter-sweet, boozy, earth, ash and bitter coffee with a dry warming finish. Medium body and fine carbonation. Perhaps a touch boozy, but pretty decent nonetheless.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20 highlandlad (1376) - Blue Mountains, AUSTRALIA - APR 24, 2013
Anzac Day special: big shout across the Tasman to Stu McKinlay and our bros in the struggle for better beer. This is a splendid imperial black IPA. If it wasn’t 10% I’d be driving back to the bottle shop to load up right now. Instead, I’m lolling in front of the computer with a big stupid grin on my coupon. When I first tasted Pot Kettle Black, I knew Stu and the guys could produce a great strong ale. This one is raven black with a short, lacing head. Gorgeous, rich aroma - keeps you dipping your snout over and over. Licorice, violets, dark molten chocolate, white, pepper, Shiraz - just lovely. Huge, filling mouthfeel. Thick, creamy. Not a million miles from an imperial stout in the mouth, with a terrific licorice-root spicy finish. Port, molasses, pine cones. Bravo. Dearly hope this wasn’t a seasonal one-off. (330ml bottle from Leura Cellars.)
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 allanbowers (93) - melbourne, AUSTRALIA - APR 14, 2013
Pours jet black with no head.
This is a fairly light 10% beer.
It isnt the hoppiest IPA though it is very drinkable.
It is quite flat, though that is not a criticism,

UPDATED: APR 6, 2013 Looks and smells great. Caramel is the dominant aroma. Hops come through on the taste a bit more, but so does the sweet caramel flavours. An interesing black IPA. Not terribly bitter, but very tasty. Overall, a nice variation on the style. Definitely a keeper for me.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 bluebetty (1019) - AUSTRALIA - MAR 10, 2013
Bottle. Pours a very dark dark brown with dense tan coloured head. Falls away pretty quickly leaving very fine lacing and all but the thinnest file. Aromas are dominated by dark sugars, molasses and citrusy hops. Flavours are super sweet and very molasses like. Only slight hop bitterness on the finish with some alcohol to balance. Full mouthfeel.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jonnyguns (384) - - FEB 22, 2013
Bottle from mane liquor. This is a beast of a beer! Pours a jet black with a disappearing beige head. Superb lacing left around the glass! Nose has heavy milk chocolate tones along with hints of vanilla and espresso. Taste has a citrus/grapefruit hop bitterness to it. Chocolate smooths out the palate. My palate is just coated in chocolate. Cream mouthfeel. Can feel the alcohol. Great black ipa one of my favs for this style
