What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

"tribute to MCA on the day he passed. didn’t know going in if this was a porter, stout, black ipa... first impression was porter. at first whiff the malt was the key player. lots of dark roast. but then the spicy hops took over and the bitterness lingered in the aftertaste. final impression was somewhere in between. nice beer. kinda steep for what you get, though."

Dark brown almost black with a small off white head, aromas of roasted, coffee, chocolate & toffee, had bourbon flavours leaving a mild bitter aftertaste, very good, I would easily get this again.

Bottle. Deep black with an attractive cappuccino head and heavy lacing. Although muted, typical IPA aromas of grapefruit and pine with a deep roasty overtone. Delicious pine flavours with restrained bitterness that creeps through the beer and avoids any oiliness. A long mid to end palate of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and just a lick of wood smoke. Minimal carbonation. Fantastic beer.

Bottle from Soho Wine at home. Dark black pour, very thin tan head with some lacing. Not much aroma at all. Taste is roasted, then a bit soapy, with a lot of bitterness. Hard to place - but not in a good way. Sort of thin, sort of bitter, sort of roasty. Not bad but disappointing. Wouldn't get again.

Bottle. Smells of nutty gently roasted malt, bit of cola, faint sweet syrup. Tastes sweet and fizzy, slight spice, not much depth. Bitter finish. Body on the thin side but with sharp carbonation. Love the name! But a trifle disappointing - not really reminiscent of either an IPA or a porter despite being somewhat bitter and roasted. Not much to the taste.

(bottle - 330 ml) Dark brown pour with a fluffy tan head. Floral and peppery hop aroma sitting atop a light and roasted malt and chocolate blend. Flavor is hops and bitter roasted hops without any of the sweetness I thought I might get. Some sweet malts come up at the end but give way to a bitter finish.
