COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION 2008
The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

The only dark beer available amongst a plethora of pale ales. Cola brown and dazzling with ruby highlights. Tight, compact beige head of foam holds for the length. Complex malt and hop nose – mocha, dark chocolate, salted caramel and brown sugar, ash, rust and charred wood with a piney, resinous, fresh hop edge. Drier than the aroma suggests. Dusty, smoky, burnt malt and bitter chocolate finish. Good length. Resinous hops again leaning heavily towards pine-needles but it is the malt that dominates. A good lot of mocha throughout with just a hint of raisin and muscatel. Medium, sprightly carbonation and light in body. Easy drinking would be an understatement. A delicious brew!

Bottle that I’m finally getting around to drinking almost two years later. Been refrigerated and tonight I’m drinkingmitnfrom a Nonic pint glass. Mahogany wood co,or pour with red hues. Dense beige head, about a half finger’s width. Aroma is roasted coffee beans with hop aromatics. The liquid fizzed like a cola when I poured it into the glass. Taste is moderately sweet roast and drinks a lot like iced coffee. Very creamy flavor and mouthfeel. Even after all this time, this brew is quite good. Understandably the hop flavors are somewhat vegetal but the dark oast provides enough bitterness in their place. I’m not sure what this tasted like fresh, but I can tell you it’s drinking great now.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2014 22.06.2013, 0,35l bottle sampled @ The Festival Portland Maine:
Small shortlasting head. Aroma is unripe banana, dark malts, grass, dark sugar, coffee, dark fruits. Taste is slightly sour-ish, dark malts, sour coffee, grass, bitter chocolate, sorrel, oak. Medium bitterness, dry mouthfeel, overcarbonated. Next!

Explosive, intense head taking most of the glass. Surprising. Very dark brown black colour, beige head fading quite quick when compared to its burst out of the bottle. Aroma of more hops than expected, pleasant for a stout(ish) brew but not too much to write home about. Flavours with lots of coffee, bitter sweet chocolate, some hops and hop bitterness. Possibly an older bottle here, a bit of copper rusty flavours coming through which added unbalanced bitterness. Rated generously considering this, may need a shorter expiry. Very enjoyable beer nonetheless.

This pours a black color with tan head. This beer isn’t bad for the style. Has a nice roasted body with slight bitter, hoppy finish.

Pours a deep black with a long lasting creamy tan head. Very good head retention and lacing. Aroma of rich chocolate roasted malt essence. Taste same as aroma with a bit of roasted malt bitterness. A medium body, slightly creamy on the palate. A rich roasted chocolate malt flavor with some mild roasted malt and light hops bitterness. A very good and tasty brew.

This beer poured dark brown with a hint of orange at the bottom of the glass. On top was about a finger of light brown head with low retention. There was almost no carbonation. There was not much smell, I picked up a bit of roast and hops. I like the flavour of this beer, there was malt and hops with some coffee and chocolate. I feel like this bottle had been sitting on the shelf for a while, but still enjoyable overall.

Tap a Mane Liquor. Pours pitch black with a short khaki head. Resiny, tropical aromas with a touch of pine needles and moch. Taste is big roasty mocha, resin and a touch of sweet vinegar. Present bitterness but not overriding. Sessionable dark beer!
