What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

Bottle between five on 8th Dec 2014 during the Shrewsbury Bottle Exchange group: cheers Paul for this. Dark ruby/brown body with a full beige head. Nose of chocolate and earthiness. Flavour wise it again had some dark chocolate and earth like flavours but the hops came into play more. The finish being dry and bitter. Different and interesting.

A dark brown ale with a thick frothy mocha head. In aroma, sweet chocolate caramel malt with nice treacle notes, roasted coffee, light butterscotch, very nice. In mouth, a nice chocolate malt with light coffee notes, grassy hops, resinous and smooth, light musty character, very nice.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Dark brown body with a thick beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma of chocolate, leather, sweat and damp earth. Flavour of rich chocolate sponge, nuts and floral hops. Medium body with a creamy texture. Light fizz. It’s certainly hoppy but the overall flavour becomes a bit rich and sickly.

Pours deep inky black with almost no head. Aroma is roast, coffee with floral undertones. Taste is bittersweet with a nice hoppyness . Medium bodied, smooth, soft carbonation with a crisp finish. This really straddles the line perfectly between hops and malts as both are very noticeable.

"tribute to MCA on the day he passed. didn’t know going in if this was a porter, stout, black ipa... first impression was porter. at first whiff the malt was the key player. lots of dark roast. but then the spicy hops took over and the bitterness lingered in the aftertaste. final impression was somewhere in between. nice beer. kinda steep for what you get, though."
