COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION 2008
The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Jet black pour with a small tanned head. Nose is full of hops and coffee! hints of citrus and pine in there. Pine hops more evident in the taste. Coffee and chocolate are massive flavours with a hint of smoke. Creamy mouthfeel. Massive beer. Not my style of beer but boy this f***en awesome!!!

Bottle at home from supermarket, Wellington 6/1/13
Ruby tinged mahogany with lacing of latte head. Fruity coffee on the nose with medium carbonation, resinous hoppiness soon replaced by dry dusty cocoa and bourbon biscuits. More hoppy porter than BIPA but still a good beer.

Pours near black with a thin wispy off-white head. Notes of sweet roast, toffee. Full bodied with lush carbonation.

Draft a blue monk, black pour. Slight roast in aroma but little else. Extremely flavorful, chocolatety roast., nice bitterness, milk chocolate, piney hops in finish. Delicious porter/black IPA what ever you want to call it. I’m sold

On tap at Cookie. Great black PA, well balanced. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, and liquorice. Taste is sweet, with a long bitter finish. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

Obsidian pour with a small latte head that never really leaves, coating the top of the brew in a thin film all the way to the bottom of the glass. Aroma shows tons of dark roasted coffee, vanilla, and malt. Chocolate, brownie batter, mint, vanilla bean, and coffee. Definitely more porter than IPA...missing the citrus and evergreen bite but delicious non-the-less.

Not a huge fan of porters but this is nicely balanced with citrus hops. Pours a medium brown/black. Has aroma of coffee, molasses and dirt. Surprisingly sweet upfront with an almost root beer flavour. Finishes with slight bitterness. Not bad.

Bottle shared by Tmoney99. Pours dark brown in color with a medium sized beige head. The aroma and flavor run pretty similar; roasted malts, mild dark chocolate notes, light citrus character. Mild bitterness to the finish.
