What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

Pours a rich dark brown. While the nose was a little stunted the flavours in the mouth are abundant. Hints a cocoa supplement a superbly hopped offer from YB.

On tap @ Pomeroy. New Zealand holiday 2011-12. Old notes. The aroma has roasty malts and citric hops. Black coloured beer with an off-white head. The taste is light roasty, has some smooth caramellic sweetness, bit chocolate and with a strong fruity hoppy bitterness. Well made IPA-stout blend.

Black pour, moderate tan head, decent lace/retention. Aroma is roasty with higher than normal hop notes - tropical and grassy. However roasted malts with chocolate dominate. Medium bodied, moderate bitterness, pretty nice.

Tria Rittenhouse, Philadelphia tap: Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate, coffee, some light citrus. Taste is a pretty good combination of hops and porter chocolateness. Nice roasted malts flavors. I think this was rather well-balanced.

330 ml bottle pours black with tan head and slow steady stream of carbonation. Aroma is sweet of malt, floral hops and alcohol. Initial taste is calm and then the burnt malt well balanced with alcohol. Medium to full body with bitter dry aftertaste.

Bottle. Black with a tan head. Sweet coffee and a bit of caramel. Taste starts sweet then is big bitter coffee.

11.2oz bottle. Poured into my DFH IPA glass. Pours a clear, dark brown, red color. Not quite black, not quite as black as neither most american black IPAs nor most american porters, not a big deal, though. Good thin half-inch tan head, with good retention. Leaves great, thicker swaths of lace. Looks excellent. Medium body. Smooth crisp light carbonation, lightly slick finish. Very easy to drink. Good roasty malt, some bitter dark chocolate, bigger coffee aromas. Good earthy hop, light citrus. Moderate to bigger bitter taste, moderate sweet. Very enjoyable hoppy porter / black IPA.

Dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma has notes of dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, and some light fruit. Flavor is much closer to a black IPA than a porter with hop bitterness coming forward and the malt/sweetness fading. Medium bodied, light carbonation.

The aroma has an intoxicating blend of chocolate, coffee, cherry, spice and even a little brine. The first taste is brilliant as the palate comes across all creamy until it suddenly dissipates alarmingly. The chocolate malt gives way to citrus and salty brine. Bit of an odd one that reminds me of the Bellarine Mussel Stout.

11.2 FL OZ bottle purchased from New England Wine & Spirits for $7. To undersized snifter, it pours a richly deep sienna with an explosive fluffy burnt vanilla buff head 2 to 3 fingers in length. Aromas of fudge, toffee, spelt, salted caramel, hazelnuts, earth, and dates. Tastes the same with the addition of Oceanic hops, London yeast, and unripe clementine by swallow. I’d like it more had this not been so eruptive; half the liquid vanished before my very eyes.
