COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
What exactly is this: a Black IPA, a Hoppy Porter or a Nelsonian Dark Ale? Whatever you end up deciding to call the beer (and we still haven’t decided), it is New Zealand’s original hoppy dark ale and the inaugural People’s Choice champion at the NZ Brewer’s Guild "Beervana" festival. Even better, in a first for the Yeastie Boys, we’re now bottling the beer all-year-’round... if you’re lucky you may even find it from time to time in keg.
Note: PKB was originally released as an annual release in 2008 (5.2%) and 2009 (6%) but from 2010 is now available all-year-’round.

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION 2008
The first seasonal release from the newest kids on the local craft beer block. ’Pot Kettle Black’ is an unusually hoppy rich and robust porter balancing the delectable dark malt flavours of traditional porter with fruity hop characteristics usually associated with modern craft pale ales. The result is a rare beer indeed: moreish, nutritious and delicious. Tech info: ABV = 5.2% OG = 1061 IBU = 47 Malt: NZ Pale Malt, Melanoiden Malt, Crystal 55L, Pale Chocolate, Black Patent Malt. Hops: Nelson Sauvin, New Zealand Styrian, New Zealand Cascade (organic, to please the brewing gods).

COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Winter 2009 sees the return of Yeastie Boys much loved debut beer - New Zealand’s original ’Black IPA’. This year’s vintage is built upon the same malt base as the original but has fired up the ’chocolate and orange character’ with more NZ Cascade hops and a zesty fistful (or 10) of imported Styrian Goldings. At 6.0%abv and 50ibu it is rich, hoppy and way too drinkable.

UPDATED: OCT 3, 2008 I’ve got to say that my initial experience with pot kettle black was far from positive....sweaty armpit on the nose....surely not? Suddenly realising my proximity to the cheese stand at Beervana beer festival i concluded that was what i could smell.... Extensive further testing in a less fragrant atmosphere revealed the error of my ways and i found the beer absolutely delicious Re-rated tried on gas at bar edward....damn i love that pub and not a cheese stand in sight! Unmitigated delight! I’m a fan of dark beers.... brew enough of them but this is easily the most accessable dark beer i’ve ever tried, it’s the kind of beer that bridges the gap for people and for me that makes it brilliant! great stuff!

330ml bottle. Pours dark black-brown with very little head. Nose is dark stonefruits with toffee and some hoppy coffee. Taste is malty caramel coffee with some raisin hops. Really nice porter.

First thing I noticed about this beer as it was being pulled on a hand pump at Bar Edwards (Newtown) was that it looked like a good expresso - with a deliciously inviting rich crema. And funnily it does have a coffee-ish flavour about it. However the first thing that hits you is the big grassy resiny hop aroma - usually uncharacteristic of a beer that looks this malty. Don’t get me wrong the malt is there as well, the finish is a bit like a Ghana Dark - chocolatey and bitter. This is a great beer - try it while it lasts.

On tap at Cookie. Great black PA, well balanced. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, and liquorice. Taste is sweet, with a long bitter finish. Palate is velvety, and medium bodied. Dark brown, with a frothy head.

What a sexy beer! In the glass dark chocolate and cherry hue colours topped by an amazing beige coffee crème head. On the nose, grassy hops all the way with sun dried stone fruits and a hint of coffee giving this beer a rich and bold persona. First taste does not disappoint, smooth on the palette opening up taste buds to receive chocolaty malt flavours with a hint of bitter coffee at the end, beautiful! I’ve tried this on hand pump and tap, both excellent, but I prefer the tap version which drinks smoother and exaggerates the chocolate of this beer. First commercial attempt from this brewer, I can’t wait to drink what’s next in store.

This beer was a surprise. Aroma was good, I loved the appearance, the taste was surprisingly delightful, and overall, if this beer was more available to me here in the Pacific Northwest, I would add it to me regular picks!

On tap at Galbraiths, the last keg. Pours black with an off white head. Really nice fruit and citrus aroma’s which blend well with subtle notes of coffee and chocolate. Mouthfeel is silky with a smooth bitterness which lingers on the tounge. Hints of choc and roast malt in the finish.

The aroma is dark malts, chocolate and some hops. The flavor is chocolate and mildly sweet with some hops popping up in the finish. More of a porter with a decent hoppiness than a Black IPA, this was a very good ale all around.
