3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MartinT (6934) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 25, 2013
My Bottom Line:
Leafy hop resins and savvy caramelized malts join in this classic, British-style interpretation of a Barley Wine.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam crowns the brownish dark red.
-Wooden barrels contribute but a hint of their nature. Which is fine by me, actually.
-Resinous hop bitterness balances out the finish.
-There isn’t much complexity here, but it is still an ale worthy of contemplation.
On tap at Watering Hole.

Tap at Watering Hole, Tokyo. Dark brown-red colour with a small quickly vanishing head. Aroma of dried plums, dark fruit, sugar. Flavour is port, plums, sweet caramel, sugar. Long aftertaste of raising, dark fruit.

Aroma: Initial alcohol and varnish blows off, leaving bourbon vanilla and raisin
Palate: medium-full body
Flavor: bourbon flavored malt and raisin. Finishes with coffee.
Comment: Much lighter body and drier character than the Kure Barley wine which was also available at the BBS and which blended quite well with this.

tons of brown sugar, burnt raisins, a very slight hint of oak, but the barrel aging is not so prominent. Oranges and cherries in the background. Think, a touch syrupy mouth and brandy. Lingering oak and brandy finish. Fantastic

Draft at JBT 3 year anniversary. Dark, muddy brown. Flat. Big nose of caramel, toffee, oak, butterscotch. Oaky, treacle flavor, buttery, estery, raisins, huge toffee. Smooth, not too heavy. Nice stuff, though the oak is a bit overpowering.

Warm, inviting BW, but a bit dull. Like spending the night in front of a fireplace playing scrabble. Nice, dark orange amber colour. Self contained with little of peripheral interest. Raisin, orchard fruits, apricot and vanilla all tied in together. Carbonation was practically non existent. Apparently spent a month in the barrel.
