Sweet bready nose with a touch of doughy yeasts, herbs, and alcohol. Nice round mouthfeel with sweet breadieness and more of that spicey herbal character. Finishes semi sweet and bready. Japanese Biere de Garde in a can..who would have thunk it

Can, July 2007. Very light amber with a strong light orange tint. Looks thin. High, fine, white head. Aroma of amber malt, not very strong. Slightly sweet. Flavor of amber malt, yeast, and a touch of barnyard, though much more like a Belgian than the biere de garde I had in France. A very nice, strong, roasted malt, hay, and hops finish. The finish is the most impressive part. This is a nice, dry beer, with a good bit of the earthy taste I am used to in the type. A bit lighter than I remember the style, and a good deal more bitter in the finish as well. An excellent beer.

Can. The first time I had this I was on a train to Yokohama but was had rated too many beers earlier that night to really get a good grip on what this was really like. The copper color with thick off-white head is a good start. Herbal, bread, yeast, and citrus orange aroma. Mouth is medium, with soft carbonation. Yeast, light citrus, biscuit, and sweet herbs makes for a pleasant flavor. A well made, enjoyable, and surprising biere de garde.

2007 version. Really nice warm honeyed brown color. Gamey nose like rich meats. Gorgeous smokey flavors include more game and pate. Thick creamy palate. This works as a biere de garde very well.

Cask at Tokyo Real Ale Festival 2008. Pale-amber, minimal head. I had to seriously try hard to get any aroma out of this, and this was only my third sample at the festival. It did come through as faint floral-peach tones. The flavor did pick up with some broad maltiness but overall this needed some more assertiveness, despite being a decent effort.

My Bottom Line:
This Bière de Garde’s bready, fruity yaest signature is followed by a well-calculated herbal, leafy hop finish which balances out the diplomatic caramel maltiness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the golden amber.
-The expressive yeastiness is authentic and fits the style perfectly.
-The soft effervescence and well-crafted maltiness produce a solid body.
-The yeast’s fruitiness is in the apricot/orange range.
-A good Bière de Garde is being brewed in Japan folks!

Can.

I haven’t tried this in a can yet, but I heard the tap version is better. Deep golden color, horse blanket, raspberries, milk chocolate and oranges in the nose. Sweet malty mouth, raspberries, oranges, earth, horse blanket. Finishes a bit yeasty with some cherries. Perhaps my favorite Ya Ho beer.

Small white head quickly disappears. Deep yellow body. Earthy, metallic aroma with incense notes. Sweet earthy, softly metallic taste with notes of wet straw, incense, and paper. Quite unusual, and as far as I can tell, really a BdG. Dry, earthy aftertaste. Quite good. (0.35l can.)
