12-oz can. Pours jet black with a dense and creamy burnt tan head. Big roasty, ashy, acrid nose. Just smells so dang dry. Probably a little CO2 there as well. Creamy medium body with soft carb. Some dry milk chocolate notes creep in, but mostly it’s roasty and ashy on the mid-palate. Pretty much a straight down the line session porter with a couple of minor flaws. Kind of a cool looking can. Would be a decent camping beer for cooler weather.

Light and soft black beer that blooms in to something fruity and fragrant and ends in a semi dry very lightly toasted finish. Hint of banana. Complex.

Can. Hoppy and honey roasted chocolate aroma. Black, golden brown lacing foam. Coffeeground base, gets sweeter after a initial bitter kick. Dry mouthfeel, roasted almonds round the flavor off. Coffee exhaling. Quick finish.

Can from KyotoLefty. Mildly roast and mildly chocolaty. A nice porter that was exceptionally easy to drink. If this was cheap and available in the U.S I would buy.

Handpump at Ushi-tora. Black with a large tan head. Strong malt aroma, but with decent hops as well. A touch of fruit, quite well roasted, medium sweetness, with chocolate, coffee, a bit of caramel, and a touch of citrus. Strong malt flavor, with moderate hops and moderate sweetness. Smooth and creamy, well roasted, with some fruit a bit of dark fruits, some coffee chocolate and caramel. Very complex. Very roasted finish, slightly hoppy, quite long lasting. Fuller than moderate body, very low carbonation. Smoother and creamier than from the can, with very low carbonation. The hops are less noticeable, but definitely better this way. Great head retention.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2009 Canned (as Shinsyu Porter). Very black with rocky beige head. Appley roasty nose. Fairly sweet and medium bodied with dense mouthfeel. Oily with soy sauce, very roasty with plenty of coffee and dark chocolate. Finishes with cocoa bitterness.

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2012 Like a sweeter version of their tokyo black this is very nice, but about 70 yen more than said beer, so theres really no point to this one in my eyes, other than the donation that is offered through the sale of the beer

Robust is a great word to describe this, with a very creamy taste on the palate. As smooth as silk and a lot of dark flavours for such a low alcohol. My go to black beer in Japan

UPDATED: DEC 20, 2008 Poured a light brown head with a body as black as coal. Nice nose of molasses, chocolate, and dark breads - Malty. Very nice on the tastebuds! Rasin, dark chocolate and licorice, finishing with a hint of bitterness. Full and creamy on the palate, soft in the mouth, slight chalky feel towards the end. As with Yo-Ho Yona Yona real ale I have to give this a high overall grade in that for a Canadian living in the countrside of Japan its a very well priced (and delicious!) alternative when you cant get your hands on much else. Great value!

GBBF, Trade Day, 2008 Gravity cask. A decent sweet stout. Doesn’t finish clean or tasty. Some alcohol warmth. OK.
