COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Tokyo Black is the second brand at YoHo. A robust porter, well balanced between the malt and the hops. The complex chocolate and roast flavours of dark specialty malts are combined with a floral and slightly spiciness from Perle hops.

Pours coffee black, maybe a shade lighter. Head is soapy, beige and pretty big but fades quickly. The aroma is mostly cocoa with touches of mocha, roast and a mild twang of acidity. Taste is sweet with more simple chocolate flavor and finishes with a fairly assertive coffee/roast bitterness. The coffee flavor is a bit stale. The acidity comes through a bit in the taste, as well. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy, but it could use more body. It’s a decent porter but nothing special and certainly not worth the price, at least here in the US.

Can. Quality pour you’d expect -- richly black, with a substantial head. The aroma is somewhat off-putting, with a sourly sweet licorice essence. The beer drinks with a bit more restraint, the bitter chocolate bite being not quite as pronounced, and actually quite drinkable. (#4138, 6/12/2011)

Coffee black body with a true, lustrous, poofy mocha head. Coffee grain roasty nose meets melanoidin and spicy hops. This complexity carries over to the body. Pleasant coffee roast encircled by melanoidin, a depth of salted caramel, and some deep malt ball as well as a decidedly, hard-to-pin-down, Japanese character. There is a lot going on in this brew and the experience develops nicely.

Can at Black Squirrel. Black (not a surprise, I guess). Tan head. Aroma of pumpernickel bread and black pepper. Taste is coffee grounds. Medium body. A proper porter.

350ml can. Poured a dark brown, almost black color with off-white head. Aroma is roasted malts, caramel, coffee notes. Flavor is roasted malts, caramel, good.

Dark brown in color, clear with a thin tan head. Nice Dark malt aroma and flavor. Very little hops this was a Malt bomb. Very biscuit in flavor forward. Dry malt finish. Not bad to drink. Some light flavors of vanilla and caramel come out.

Can. Black pour with a tall, dense, creamy brown head. Strong roasted malt, dark chocolate and light coffee notes present in the aroma. Taste is also strong roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, faint vanilla and burnt caramel. Body is medium overall with a dense, creamy carbonation. Finishes much like it began - roasted malt, dark chocolate, and coffee but adds hints of chocolate milk, more hints of vanilla and light caramel.

Thanks to Eric for this can. Served in a tulip. Pours black with a huge tan head and quite a bit of nice, streaky lacing as it falls down the glass. Eventually this settles into a thin cap that looks nice around the edges of the beer. The nose is pretty plain and is disappointing after viewing this thing. There is some mild roast there and maybe an undercurrent of chocolate, though that might be stretching it a bit. The flavor involves some mild roast and a touch of dark chocolate. The body is medium and it has an off-putting dry, roasty finish. An okay beer, but not something I would seek out again. Thanks again for the gift, Eric. Serving type: can Reviewed on: 01-24-2011

11.8oz can, poured into tulip, great tan head, roasty aroma, lots of coffee in this one. A bit watery, hints of coffee and a mild bitterness. Not a ton of aftertaste to this, very easy drinking. This is quite nice.

Tokyo Black pours thin and is jet black. The head is mocha brown and remains for about 30 seconds. Moderate lacing lines the glass. The smell is mostly of bitter coffee and dark chocolate. The smell, like the beer itself, is a bit thin. The taste is only a little bitter with coffee and chocolate notes. A slightly metallic aftertaste lingers. The mouthfeel is thin but smooth and soft. Perhaps a little more prickly carbonation than a porter should have. Overall, this beer is ok but not great. Yona Yona Pale is a better offering fro Yo Ho.
