Cask, The Earl of Mercia (JDW) Coventry. And Iím sat there now, the sun streaming through the windows of the upstairs bar, the town hallís gilded highlights glinting. Wish I could wax as loquacious about the beer - very smooth in a cafe au lait way, strong crema head, sweet licks abound but írobust porterí and ícomplex chocolateí are but fleeting concepts to what is a plain and simple drink. Inoffensive and undemanding.

Pours coffee black, maybe a shade lighter. Head is soapy, beige and pretty big but fades quickly. The aroma is mostly cocoa with touches of mocha, roast and a mild twang of acidity. Taste is sweet with more simple chocolate flavor and finishes with a fairly assertive coffee/roast bitterness. The coffee flavor is a bit stale. The acidity comes through a bit in the taste, as well. Mouthfeel is somewhat creamy, but it could use more body. Itís a decent porter but nothing special and certainly not worth the price, at least here in the US.

Can->shaker. Black with small tan head. Coffee and roasted malt. Bittersweet, tad thin. Pretty good.

Found this in the dept store under the train station in Shibuya. TimE showed me the place last year! An opaque black with a big chunky but quickly fading light brown head.
Powdered cocoa, oysters, espresso and a touch of wild flower in the nose. Roasted malts, some unsweetened chocolate, a bit thin feeling. Smooth but slightly tinny. Not bad but didnít meet my expectations from this brewery.

A beautiful, near black color with a two-layered beige and tan foamy head. Looks like a black and tan or a latte. A nice if simple scent with equal parts baking chocolate and coffee. A creamy feel with sweet, strong roasty flavors up front, the dark chocolate comes through as it warms, either in the glass or in your mouth. This is another well made stout coming from Japan.

Originally reviewed: 5/11/09. Pours a deep black, very thick. Nice two-finger tan head resting on top. Retention is weak, and thereís some spotty lacing, but not much. Smell is sour at first, but then gives way to a nice roasty scent with hints of cocoa and espresso.
Very nice creamy mouthfeel on this. Smooth velvet coats the mouth. Right off the bat, thereís a big metallic twang on the mouth. This recedes and becomes a roasty chocolate and bready flavor. This is very drinkable. I could drink these all night. I was very impressed with this porter, from a can no less. Recommend.

Can. Pours an almost pitch black color with a roasty tan head. Aroma is super roasty with lots of roasted coffee, almost smokey notes, ashy and charcoal notes and some liquorice. The flavor is again super roasty with roasted coffee and lots of charcoal and ash and a touch of dark caramel too. The body is medium with a creamy and silky mouth feel. Overall a pretty solid Porter but a little to roasty and ashy.

Poured into a tulip glass. Jet black with a finger of tan head.
A good nose of burnt malt, but rounds out with roasted malt.
Heavy hitter on the burnt malt in the taste. I like it. Joined by nice bitterness makes it "gripping". Hint of milk but the burnt malt reigns supreme.
On the creamy side, smoother, bubbles on the tongue. Medium body.
A tasty, standard porter.

Can from Hasegawa Liquors, Tokyo Station. Deep black colour, off white head. High initial carbonation. Stout end of porter, deepnrasty flavours, burnt, some cocoa. Hint of boozy molasses and brown sugar. A tasty beer.

From a can at Streetfood Asia (Albuquerque). Pours an opaque black with waterfall tan head and lasting lace. Subtle chocolate aroma. Full body with creamy mouthfeel (N?).
Mellow roasted character with slightly dry chocolate. Even dry/sweet dark malts flavor balance. Clean dry finish. Very nice.
