4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
02 Bottle. First Japanese barleywine! Nice. Some oxidation but not bad. Faint hop bitterness balance out the wonderful sweetness. Raisins, molasses and caramel flavors. A little slick mouthfeel, very enjoyable.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
I was expecting a bit more from this. Good, but certainly not great. More like a Double IPA than anything and still not that hoppy. A bit thin too for how big it is. Disappointing for a beer from such a great brewer.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
11.16oz bottle, 2002 vintage. Pours clear amber, capped with a big tan head that fades to a ring of bubbles. Aroma exhibits a nice balance between grapefruity hops and toffee. Palate is disappointingly thin. Flavor is primarily caramel malt, with some toffee, rye, mild hops, and alcohol. It’s not bad, I just wish it had more body to it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle, 2002 Vintage, via bu11zeye. Pours a slightly hazy amber body with a small wispy off-white head. The nose is showing a good bit of oxidation, lots of cardboard and some sherry notes. Still a good bit of toffee though. The oxidation works pretty well though, adding a nice aged character without dominating. Toffee, figs, light alcohol, and some lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied, not sticky at all, with gentle light carbonation. A little warming on the finish. Overall, pretty decent still, but I can’t see this getting any better. Drink ’em if ya got ’em.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2002 bottle. Thanks go to Markus for this one! Poured rich coppery amber with a short cap of beige head. The aroma showed its age in a graceful way.. aged caramel and toffee with a bit lesser dark fruit.. touch of peppery spice on the back. Spicier in the flavor department with white pepper and a hint of rye over aged toffee and caramel.. warmer on the finish with a little peppery alcohol. Medium-plus bodied and warm on the palate with a bit of oxidized bitterness.. tasty stuff!

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
2002 vintage thanks to Jason. The beer pours to a glassy dark amber body with a thin, mostly dissipating off-white head. The aroma is very sherry like with lots of oxidized barley. The flavor has a generic bitter thing going on with a sweet lightly oxidized barley base like a J.W. Lee’s Harvest Ale. The palate is medium bodied but very viscous. Bitter. Overall, pretty good but perhaps a touch past it’s prime.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, 70cl(?). 2005 vintage. Pours a slightly unclear, dark golden body with a small, beige head on top. Piney, resiny, slightly citrusy aroma with a nice malty sweetness to balance it. Caramel. It has a little warming feeling on the palate, with the flavors being on the hoppy side, with resin, pine and citrus. Still, there’s enough malty caramel-sweetness to prevent it from going completely out of balance. Bitter, resiny and warming finish. A delicious treat, and a nice experience drinking it with it’s creator. (080811)
