Pours darkest brown with faint ruby highlights when held to the light. The thick brown head lasts and lasts but the lacing is minimal. Aroma of bitter chocolate, toasted bran muffin, spice and dark roasted coffee. Flavor is dark chocolate, sweet burnt malts with a bitter hop finish - becomes more complex and delicious as it warms. Thick body with a creamy mouthfeel. Nice.

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2003 From a can, this beer pours (in Chimay glass) a light chocolate milk color giving way to a solid black inpenatrable by light with a 1/2 inch solid, off-white, silky-creamy head. Aroma is of molasses, toffee, coffee, chocolate. Beer looks absolutely perfect for drinking. Flavor is a bitter dark chocolate giving way to a milk coffee with malt. Beer is not effervecent and the consistency is very thin - like water. Excellent beer. Terrific!! I could drink this forever. Best beer I've ever had from a can. Sampled at 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Wow! This stuff is great! I found out that one of my usual hang-outs has it so I tried one last night. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, very complex. This one's a winner.

I really enjoyed this late one night. It was as black as the night outside. Beige head that leaves sparkly lacing. Awesome roasted flavor, ground coffee beans. I could taste the hint of dark chocolate. Very smooth. Very good.

I wish that Doc from Steinbeck's "Cannery Row" could have had some of this for his beer milkshake. Dark, dark brown with a frothy, tan head. Dark chocolate (surprise!) aroma. Burst of chocolate flavor. Unusual in that it starts out tasting like sweet milk chocolate but has a fairly dry dark chocolate finish. Some coffee hints as well. However, the dominant chocolate flavor makes this a somewhat one-dimensional stout. Silky, rich palate. An enjoyable dessert beer.

Nice thick brown head, great aroma with chocolate and nutty hints. Full bodied flavor, smooth chocolate that fades to a subtle bitterness. A bit heavy for a solo night but good for drinking with friends.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2004 Dark, dark brown, evincing a hint of reddish amber when held to light. Head is finely bubbled, and clings to the side of glass in sheets. Aroma is dark chocolate, bitter roast, chocolate-covered raisins, and a bit of plum. Flavor is bitter-roasted barley, chocolate predominately, with little coffee. Sweetish finish with a touch of grain astringency. Sharp, small-bubbled carbonation and a quinine finish that lasts a long time. Very good.
