Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011.
Ingredients: Pale ale and crystal malt, chocolate malt, special blend of sugars, Fuggle and Goldings hops, real dark chocolate and chocolate essence.
Chocolate malt and real dark chocolate are combined with Young’s award winning rich, full flavoured dark beer to craft a satisfyingly indulgent, but never overly sweet experience.

Tastes faintly of chocolate, but not very intense. Dark colored beer. I don’t know about lacing, because I drink it straight from the bottle. Heavy aroma, chocolate aftertaste. Comes by the PINT!

UPDATED: OCT 5, 2004 Nice dark pour, mild choc. aroma which is very pleasing. The chocolate does not over power, it mingles just right with the other characteristics of this great beer. It is a excelent breakfast lunch or dinner beer.

Deep dark pour with a nice tad head. Nice toasted Chocolate aroma with some coffee and a bit of hops. Flavors are chocolate and and malt with a nice bitterness interplayed. You could drink this all night (on an empty stomache) A real world class beer.

Pours a dirty black cocoa with a deep and dense tan head. Nice retention and laces up pretty well but seemed to falter towards the end. Woo! Nice aroma on this! I can smell this all night! Deep dark chocolate with cocoa, lots of cocoa. Truffle characteristics w/o sugar. Smells wonderful! Chocolate, cocoa, coffee, walnuts with a hint of vanilla and a nice hop bite.

I lovvvvvvve chocolate. Very unusual for a weissman. But hey I’m pliable. Chocolate cherry fruit with a smalt bit of a nutty aroma. (maybe hazel) Black in beauty love it’s ebony eye round the glass, just dam dark period. Very satisfying in flavor not heavy. Defiantly the cocoa essence has landed. With it’s fruity sentiments. That says take me I’ll be good to you. Pleasingly pleasant and welcoming to the mouth. Succlent if I might add. The cocoa is lovely. I’ll take this any way I can get it. I love dark. The darker the berry the sweeter the juice.

To start with, the glass is full of chocolate-coloured foam, just like one expects from beer in a nitro-can. The foam slowly divides itself into a black liquid with a wine red shade and a finger-thick, very compact beige-brown layer of foam. The smell is an intriguing blend of (mostly) chocolate and hops: Candy-like and fresh at the same time. The carbonation is very gentle and almost discreet, also a characteristic for a nitro-canned beer. The taste is first a small rush of bitter hops. Then, a dry taste of chocolate emerges and develops into a mild mix of cocoa, hops and some notes of black coffee and a touch of dry malt. The aftertaste is dominated by a rather short and mild cocoa-flavour with a touch of salt and burned malt. I think that this beer gains on the nitro can-treatment. Yummy.

9.23.04 .5l bottle. Huh, I’ve never taken notes on this one? I reliable standby at least in its ubiquitous availability. Big and black looking in my imperial pint glass. Aromas are mildly roasty, sweet chocolate, just sweet in general. Flavors are so sweet as to create a somewhat cloying mouthfeel; accompanied by some dry roastiness, it’s not such a palatable brew. This is one that seems perhaps more tolerable on nitro tap or can. Mouthfeel is otherwise appropriately light and wet. Alcohol never interferes and this can be a fine session brew. The chocolate at times seems really over the top and never really mellows throughout the pint. Whatever, it’s an average quaff.

Pours a nice pitch black, with a thick tan head; a good looking beer. Aroma of dark chocolate. Flavor is a luscious bittersweet dark chocolate, with excellent roasted malt notes and a hint of alcohol as it warms in the glass. I loved the flavor, but the mouthfeel was truly disappointing. I expected a thick, creamy nectar to accompany such a flavor, but this beer is simply too thin for its own good. Good stuff, but I feel let down by the palate.

12 oz bottle. Flavor starts off with lots of bitter chocolate, then moves to dry stout and ends with a crisp finish. I’d call it a dry stout, not a sweet stout.

This chocolate-colored ale pours with a short tan head. Everything about this beer is chocolate: the color, the aroma and the flavor. The eclectic recipe works surprisingly well, resulting in a drink that can be consumed as a beer or as a dessert.
