Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Aroma: Lovely hops with that malty note just there to beg the next whiff... Appearance: Amber with a huge white head which lasts and lasts Flavor: Just intriguing, starts with a malty sweetness to replaced with English Hop flavors Palate: Very light on the tongue, almost dances along to a delightfuly sharp bite in the finish yummm Overall: For me with this beer characterises the charm of old world style beers... time just makes the magic deeper and better... get a few.. taste them as the bottle ages...

22 oz. bottle. This beer was very ho-hum. Aroma and appearance were okay, but left a short, dry, almost flat finish. Did not have a lot of taste. Ales are my favorite beers, and I expected a lot more from the name of this beer than I received.

Cask : The princessof wales, wimbledon. Oily mouth-feel, a really good malt/hop balance. Nice fruit flavours in there and a really aromatic nose...lovely

bottle. Amber pour with a decent head. Aromas were sweet and malty. But the flavor fell off a bit. The bitterness was nice, but just all around pretty boring.

Draught at O’Briens: Light hazy amber color. Nose of cigarette smoke, anejo tequila and a dollup of oak and aged malts. The flavor is underhopped with some diacetyl. The finish is malty. Eh.

Not really my type, but was not bad, it was dark, and resembles the Young’s house’s signature in the taste.

Bottle. Hazy gold colored ale with a orange tint. Nice big off white head that diminishes quickly. Big sweet aroma. Bitter taste with a pleasantly crisp and dry finish.
