Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

500 ml bottle, now available in Norway (Vinmonopolet). Deep amber coloured, slightly hazy, large and lingering head. Pleasant aroma of fruity hops on a moderately malty background, hints of toffee and leather. Flavour is fairly malty with some caramel and a dominant hoppy bitterness, too bitter in the finish. A bit overdone on the hops in my book, but obviously a well-above-average beer.

Dark orange color with a thin white head. Strong malt aroma with just a hint of hops. Refreshing English hops are much more prevalent in the flavor and really do balance out the malt. Amost tastes like a strong English IPA. Very enjoyable.

Orangebrown with thin white head. Roasted malt aroma with notes of citrus, pine, bread, sweet malt and apricots. Some acidity. Smoked flavor with notes of citrus, roasted malt, hops, wheat bread and fruits. Some sweetness and low bitterness.

What a treat to find this on tap. Seems in some ways to be more of a bitter. Love the dryness. The hop bite is muffled by a good roasted maltiness. This ale keeps it subtle.

On tap @ the Falling Rock poured amber with an amber head. Aroa was toffee, fruity, and light citrus. Flavors of bread a bit fruity, with a dry finish.

Bottle. My 400th beer to be rated and not a bad choice. Orange/copper colour with nettle and pepper hop aroma. Caramel/toffee flavours, caramel and hop continue throughout with hoppy pepper finish. Although 6,5% the strength doesn’t overawe it. Pretty good

Orange gold with a strong white head and dry, spicy fruity aromas. Initially smooth, but leads to a pronounced, tart, spicy, and floral hop tone. There is also more fruit flavors and some caramel and crystal malts that bring a light toastiness. The finish is slightly dry, somewhat sweet, with hints of alcohol warmth, leaving a soft yet slightly cloying aftertaste.
