Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2014 Bottle at the White Horse, London. Mid-gold, very little head. Doesn’t seem to be overly carbonated. Good. Muted citrus/grain aroma with an almost hefe-like clove, pleasing enough but nothing all that special. The taste is sticky sweet like honey with a bit of tempering bitterness. A classic balance, they’ve nailed it. This is nice, but a bit too ordinary to get mega-excited about. In one word: solid.

Krémes állagú, rézszínű főzet, melynek kellemes, pörkölt malátás illata van, ízében pedig aszalt gyümölcsök sejlenek fel egyre intenzívebben, ám fokozatosan haladva a pörkölt, füstös ízjegyeken keresztül egészen a komló végállomásként köszöntő megjelenéséig. A belga sörök karaktere is felfedezhető zamatában, mely idővel likőrös édességbe burkolózik és egyre kerekebb lesz.

It pours amber color with a medium head that leaves good crown. Smells really good: fruity, smoky, caramel, citrus. Really good beer.

16.9 oz bottle from old notes. Pours a clear amber color with a medium sizeddense off white head. The aroma and flavor have sweet malts, caramel, floral hops, some toasted bread and light fruit character. Just ok, nothing ppops and the body is a bit thin.

Pours a clear golden orange with a thick cream white head. The nose is fruity and crisp with some caramel and bread. The taste is caramel, fruit, floral with tangy fruit and mild bitterness at the end. Medium body with fine elegant carbonation.

Very nice. Aroma is pears, cooking apples, wood, honey, fruity yeast, touch of alcohol. Taste is same with slight tannin/spicy notes, hop bitterness, metallic finish. Honey becomes more dominant near the end of the bottle. Mouthfeel: It’s thin, but the interplay between the creaminess on the top of the palate, a slight resiny oiliness in the middle, and the metallic edge round the perimeter of your cakehole - or "mouth", if you will - all conspire to make this very more-ish drop feel a lot thicker than it is.
