Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007. Brand acquired solely by Charles Wells in 2011.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Bottle conditioned, aged 3.3 yrs, 500 ml. The beer matures to a dark amber with lasting white head, a pleasant pop when opening the bottle. Smooth, strong beer with heavy yeast nose. Clear and warming with vanilla undertones and a port, sherry body. the hops have lost their edge, blending in to the body. But all is not perfect! What is this fishy, cod liver oil note i get left with? never expected that. Overall a very good beer though.

500ml bottle (London Pub, Helsinki) (7-4-7-4-15=3.7)
Lovely fruity hoppy aroma, peach and mango in abundance, sweetish malts and light caramel backdrop too. Crisp carbonation - has BC’d quite well. Lovely malty palate, roast is gentle and a touch caramelly. Damn, those fruity hops are everywhere, not as citrussy as new world ones, but stickier fleshier ones. And the bitterness is lovely too, leaving a lovely tasty finish. Covers 6.4% brilliantly, I could session this. Rerate of: 500ml bottle (Kings Arms, Oxford - as 400th Anniversary Ale specially for the pub)

On tap @ the Falling Rock poured amber with an amber head. Aroa was toffee, fruity, and light citrus. Flavors of bread a bit fruity, with a dry finish.

50cl bottle found in fakta allerød. clear orange / light amber, small thick offwhite head. sweet, flowery, quite hoppy aroma, faint pine, faint grapefruit - very american for an english beer. nice. aroma is mild, balanced and lovely. flavor is dry, pine, flowery, hoppy, refreshing. very nice. overall definetly one of the best mainstream english beers i’ve had. thirstquencing, tasty and good ABV. nice!. ends rather discrete with a little hop bitterness and some malty flavors.

16.9oz bottle-pours a foamy off white head and slightly hazy copper color. Aroma is light/medium malt, yeast, maybe some faint fruit-pear/citrus, then piney. Taste is light/medium malt-toffee that gives way quickly to spicy/earthy hops, some fruit, some alcohol. Good effervescence. Occasional.

Bottle, bought @ Irma, Industriens Hus, Cph.
Pours hazy golden amber with a fine, staying, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, lots of malts, some toffee and good flowery hops. Medium carbonation, fine, lightly dry mouthfeel. Flavour is wonderful. Lots of toffee, a bit of burnt caramel, good, dryish flowery bitterness. A touch of metal perhaps, but the beer is maybe just served a tad too cold. Long, lingering aftertaste with a heacy hops presence. This is really enjoyable.

Like others experienced a lot of the contents was lost when the beer was opened. Might be because of the bottle conditioning. What do I know! Has a beautiful orange colour with a somewhat boring head. The aroma is wery fruity and malty. Has a nice bitter flavour, where the alcahol is dominant. In the aftertaste there is this great bitterness and I have notes of apples. Very pleasant acquaintance.
