COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Red amber with a nice, golden head, that leaves a nice lace. The aroma is fruity, hoppy and malty and the mouthfeel is smooth. The flavour is big with a lot of notes: roasted malt, toffee, some licorice, fermented apple, other fruits, hops, sweetness, a hint of port wine and a nice bitterness in the long and slightly burnt finish. Nice.

Leighton (9883) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - AUG 2, 2012
Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, honey-red with a light, white foam head. Aroma holds some sugar, lightly ripened fruits. Medium sweet flavor with more semi-ripe fruits, berries, golden raisins, lightly toasted sugar. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly sticky sweet finish, with lightly toasted sugars, faint bread, cherries, pears, plums, golden raisins. It’s a pretty straight-ahead English Strong Ale. Not too much alcohol, which is pretty alright. Decent depth. As a readily available beer, it’s pretty good.

Bottle conditioned, aged 3.3 yrs, 500 ml. The beer matures to a dark amber with lasting white head, a pleasant pop when opening the bottle. Smooth, strong beer with heavy yeast nose. Clear and warming with vanilla undertones and a port, sherry body. the hops have lost their edge, blending in to the body. But all is not perfect! What is this fishy, cod liver oil note i get left with? never expected that. Overall a very good beer though.

Like others experienced a lot of the contents was lost when the beer was opened. Might be because of the bottle conditioning. What do I know! Has a beautiful orange colour with a somewhat boring head. The aroma is wery fruity and malty. Has a nice bitter flavour, where the alcahol is dominant. In the aftertaste there is this great bitterness and I have notes of apples. Very pleasant acquaintance.

Lightly hazed golden ale with a thick creamy off white head. Herbal grassy hop aroma, very classy. Nice crisp malt with very nice herbal hops. Medium bodied. Bottle at the CNY Brewfest 2006.
