COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

Yes, a great one! I’m glad that i taste it. Beautiful copper, well-balanced body with a nice lacing head. Intensive aroma of fresh fruits (citrus, orange) and an overwhelming healing taste. Mildly pungent palate, nice for an ale. A bit dry yeasty impact. It reminds me to the Belhaven’s Twisted Thiste. Once more: great one, or as Duke Ellington would say: That’s the one!

This is how I picture English beers to be. Love the Fuggles and Goldings. Wish all beers were this good.

My favourite bottled beer, period. They have taken the magic from the Young’s cask ales and trapped it in a bottle, and by brewing it stronger they hav even more nuances in the flavour. The best bottled English ale you can find!

Huge frothy off white head atop a clear amber brew. Little lacing. Very piney aroma. I think I got sap on my fingers. Huge hops undertones. Wow, this smells fabtabulous. Mmm, smooth, medium bodied brew, Warms you slightly from the very instant it hits your tongue with a sweet malty flavor. Very fresh, very bitter. Nice. God I love bitter. I could drink this every day. This is goood stuff here.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy amber gold, with a small, but long-lasting, head. The aroma is dominated by strong resin notes from the hops, with the slightest hint of malty toffee. The initial flavour is again resin hops, which fade into the slightest hint of caramel malt before returning with a vengeance in the finish, which is again dominated by bitter hops. There is a slight toffee aftertaste. A truly magnificent beer: rich, rewarding and complex. Well-worth savouring again and again.

A perfectly balanced, strong ale. Malty, with rich fruit flavours. Exceptional , full bodied delight.
