Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

A- Pours an orangish copper color with a large off white head that leaves quite a bit of lacing. S- The nose consists of sweet floral notes, and pine hopiness. T- The taste is very abrreviated for lack of a better word. Starts with a rich wheat flavor and ends quickly with a slight pine biterness with little to no aftertaste. M- The mouthfeel is thick with a moderate amount of carbonation. D- This beer seems very drinkable. Not my favorite but it is easy to kick back a few in a night.

Knew this was good as the floral and citrus came off the nose. Murky colour with not much of a head. Citrus and spice with modest grip. Nice beer.

I was born and raised in London & not too far from the old Youngs brewery in (Wandsworth,London) I love London and was sad that Youngs relocated to Bedford or somewhere. Youngs are an adequate brewery, but its more nostalgia for me.
I have fond memories of walking past the brewery in the 80’s as a kid smelling the brewing process gliding through the air .
Repressed nostalgia aside I like this beer. Nice floral, aromatic -strong’ish -fruity laden beer.
It resembles Meantime IPA .I think its in the flowery uncompramising bitterness-and the fact that its actually an alive beer. A novelty compared with too many UK bottled beerz. Peace.

50cl Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Cloudy amber beer, white head. Aroma of hops, caramel, malts, sour fruits. Flavour is fruity and very hoppy, a bit spicy. Nice bitterness, bitter finish.

500ml bottle-conditioned. Piney and vinous nose with a hint of pepper. Small tight head. Malty and smooth on the tongue wih an alcohol prickle, building quickly to a full-bodied malty and spicey taste. The aftertaste is bitter-sweet with peppery hops.
