Thin, coarse-laced off-white head on dark red body. Faint sourish aroma of nuts and faint sweet roastiness. Taste is smooth, clean, nutty maltiness; quite bitter. Aftertaste is drily nutty, with hoppy bitterness lingering. Clearly a well-made beer, but rather subdued. (Cask at the Britannia.)

(Cask at Lamb, Bloomsbury, London, 23 Nov) Dark ruby colour with a brief beige head. Fruity nose with malty notes of port wine, nuts and dried fruit. Fruity taste with a malty backbone, notes of dried fruit, nuts, prunes and a slightly vinous note of port. Very tasty and nice.

One of the seasonal ales from Youngs. Subtle taste - on the opposite end of the scale from the Special London Ale. A bit on the sweet side with a nice nutty finish.

UPDATED: APR 7, 2005 Cask@The Shaftesbury, Richmond, London. This was very malty and sweet and not much else. Not really wintery or warming either, just a sticky syruppy flavour, lots of toffee/caramel, some brown sugar, to sweet and not entirely interesting.

[2712-20100119] Cask. Nice toasted weed malt aroma. Slightly hazy, dark brown red body with a long-lasting creamy off-white head. Little charred bitter wood malt flavour. Medium-full body. Great brew, in great shape too.

UPDATED: DEC 29, 2010 Jan, 2004: Catford Ram - a Young’s pub. Pleasantly malty and sweet. Good balance and a humming harmony. Sort of honeyified, like a liquid Toblerone. [3.5]
Dec, 2004: Lamb, Bloomsbury - a Young’s pub. Butterscotch. Mouldy going into dark fruits. Mild dark hop finish. OK. London Xmas Crawl. [2.9]
Feb, 2005: Young’s brewery Tap. Soft toffee. Delicate, fresh. Pleasant. Sweetness builds to become cloying. [3.0]
Nov 9th 2007Trinity Tavern, Brixton This was the meeting point for the Sex Pistols gig. And we knocked back a few ordinaries, then tucked into the Winter Warmer before heading for the Beehive and getting hammered on Scorpio Porter. What a night! This one went down well. A solid tasting English Strong Ale, though only 5%. It really has the lovely firm mouthfeel that gives the impression this is much higher. Nicely done. [3.4]
Dec, 2010 Who’d Ha Thought It, Rochester. An OK beer, but way too much crystal malt. Tastes more like an Autumn Ale. Would like some dark malts for a winter warmer. Tastes damp and greasy in places. Ho hum. Drinkable enough, but a pint is the limit. [2.8]
