Wulfstan (443), California, USA Oct 11, 2007 Updated: Oct 12, 2007This is a deep, ruby-like, brownish red, with a thick, long lasting head that stays thick to the very end, a common Young’s trait in my experience. The lacing is pretty good, being a little thin but definite and long-lasting. The aroma is malt & toasty bread with sharp fruitiness and a hint of caramel. The taste is rich, full, malty, toasty, sweet, a pronounced, but balanced, crips hoppy bitterness, making it just a tad on the hoppy bitter side for an English ale, but it is perfect here. This is a delicious, extremely satisfying beer. dirkbreedveld (222), Netherlands Dec 31, 2003 truly a winter warmer, with nice spicy tones of cinnemon, and a hoppy aftertaste which keep's you in balance. Rob_Bestwick (555), Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England Feb 5, 2003 hints of cherries in the nose, dark ruby hue, little head disipating quickly, malts and cherries in the taste, sweet and pleasant aftertaste mkobes (2027), somewhere, New Jersey, USA Dec 27, 2003 I really enjoyed this beer. Very flavorful. Fruity. Deep red in color. Well balanced. Rich caramel flavor. Hoppy. MagooinPA (87), Warminster, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 9, 2006 Updated: Dec 15, 2006On draft at a secret, special pub in Buckingham, Pa (Heart of Oak) that poured great in a U.K. pint glass.Nice head, great aroma and color with lots of malt to balance the Young’s traditional over-the-top-hop for England. Nice lace on the glass and the ABV allows me to have 3 and drive home. It ain’t all about the ABV! This is a great seasonal ale that I look foward to every year. Now that the old man has passed, enjoy while you can. Rest in PEACE old man!
