C’mon - let’s be real - what is up with prepackage black & tan? It makes no sense. And calling this a porter makes no sense. It poured the color and consistency of flat coke and tasted bland, bland, bland. Give me a real porter anyday. jcwattsrugger (5583), Florida and, New Jersey, USA

| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 26, 2006 Pours a deep reddish brown, nearly opaque with lots of mahogany highlights. Thin but persistent tan head. No lace. Aroma is lightly smoky and chocolatey. Smells of thin lager malt as well, some faint hops.
A thin lager taste up front. Gives way to a roasty dark malt. Milky and chocolatey. Smooth finish, smooth all around. Light bitter chocolate aftertaste, roasty finish. A very tasty and drinkable brew. Still one of my old favorites and a fine session beer. jerc (3966), Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Watery astringent sweet malt flavour with twice diluted roast. Thin. Poor. RCL (1499), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA

This really just reinforces my opinion of this ancient brewery: totally mediocre. There’s some slight caramel, thin hops. It’s all around really boring and very wimpy for the style. It has that cheap Yuengling taste: some kind of weak, underlying vegetal note I picked up in the lager. Weird that it’s detectable in this ale. I don’t suppose I’d hold it against anyone to consume this since it’s so cheap, but to brag about how good it may be would be a crime. jehoey (766), Shippensburg, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 2/5 | 11/20 | Jul 12, 2006 12 oz. bottle: pours a dark brown with 2 inch tan head. aroma is faint, little roasty, a little carmel in there. flavor is much of the same, but the finish does leave much to be desired. I agree with the last rater, theres some corn taste in there. That’s the biggest complaint, but it very drinkable. I grabbed it as a frigde filler for july 4th picnics. If I go to a crappy bar I usually end up drinking this or the porter. Its really not a bad beer, just not a great beer. Good mediocre hanging out beer. kramer (2533), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 2.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Jul 11, 2006 12 oz can. Pours a clear dark chestnut with a small fizzy beige head that faded quickly. Quite a bit of visible carbonation. Aroma is mostly grainy malts with a little chocolate malt, and a slight roastiness. Flavor is pretty pedestrian as well, with some nuttiness and chocolate malt. Light corn flavor comes out in the finish. Mouthfeel is thin and intensly fizzy with a watery texture. Overall, this really rates much worse than it drinks. This is a regular fridge filler for me and is my all-day, hot weather drinker. It is a shame that the corn flavor plays such a prominant role in the finish, but like I said, it’s my go-to beer when having a picnic and throwing quoits all day long.
